My husband and I enjoy food tours in the cities we visit as a way to explore the local culture. On the positive side, Jane was an informative historian who provided extensive details about the area. However, I would classify this experience more as a history tour than a food tour. Overall, our expectations were not met. There were only four stops instead of the five that were promoted, suggesting the tour operator may not have secured the restaurants and food ahead of time. We ended up walking into venues while our guide placed the food orders. Sharing soup from a communal bowl and just a single slice of pizza was an uncomfortable experience; we usually appreciate individual servings ready for us upon arrival. This tour was run by Secret Food Tours, with management based out of DC according to our guide. They could benefit from better structuring their tours to satisfy those looking for a genuine food experience. Given the cost, I expected more. The "3" rating feels generous considering this experience, although Jane did her best to make it enjoyable.
This was an excellent experience with Jane. I was surprised by how much I learned about the history of Richmond, and the food was incredibly tasty. I highly recommend this tour.
What an outstanding experience! Val, known as "Tish," was a fantastic guide. The other family we shared the tour with felt like an extension of our military and first responders family. I highly recommend this tour, and the food was exceptional. Thank you, Val!
The tour was canceled on the same morning it was scheduled. We received a courteous notification explaining that several stops were closed, making the tour impossible. I have two concerns: first, if they frequently work with these vendors, shouldn't they be aware of their schedules in advance? Second, the booking disclaimer indicates that they can alter the itinerary based on food options, so I don't understand why they couldn't find five eateries for us in Richmond. In the past, we've never encountered such an issue, and while weather would be understandable, their reasoning reflected poorly on their professionalism and showed a lack of care for their customers. We were left with no options to rebook last minute. We even extended our stay in Richmond specifically for this tour before heading to our next stop. I would not consider booking with this "foodie" company again.
I selected this tour to avoid political discussions, but the first hour was filled with her views on history. The food locations we stopped at were well selected, and the tastings were excellent. Arrive hungry, as the portion sizes are generous.
We expected a food tour, but the initial hour and a half focused heavily on Richmond's history and the statues in the capital park. However, we really enjoyed the food portion, which was excellent. The history segment felt overly lengthy.
The food selections and stops were excellent, and I was pleasantly surprised by Richmond's vibrant food scene. The tour of the capital grounds was truly impressive, particularly with the unique bronze statues and fascinating historical stories shared by the guide. However, the tour lasted significantly longer than expected, running from 11 to 3:30 instead of 11 to 2. I would have rated this experience five stars if not for the tour guide's inappropriate political commentary, which sparked uncomfortable discussions on controversial subjects throughout the tour. Despite attempts from fellow participants to redirect the conversation, she disregarded these cues. Additionally, the sharing of food was not handled sensitively; with five bowls of soup for 11 people, we were expected to share without individual bowls. At the Ethiopian restaurant, while family-style dining is customary, our requests for separate plates were ignored, and we were left uneasy about sharing food with strangers. By the end of the tour, we were thankful to be free from her political jabs and her refusal to address our basic requests for hygiene. I would recommend the tour, but with these important considerations in mind.
We had a great afternoon with Kahrell. He was friendly and shared a lot of knowledge about the city while being a delightful companion at the table.
I have participated in many food tours and noticed a couple of issues with this one. Our guide, Kharnell, was pleasant but fairly new to the role. It was a bit strange that he didn’t order ahead or announce our food tour status upon arrival. Instead, we were treated like regular diners, receiving menus and asked what we wanted to order. He mentioned we would sample one dish per stop, and we accepted water, but this made things awkward and confused the restaurant staff. Consequently, we waited an excessively long time at each location. Another aspect I disliked was the last stop, an Ethiopian restaurant, where we had a communal dining setup. I felt this was an unsuitable choice for a group of strangers. Sharing one plate and using bread as a spoon led to double dipping and finger licking, which was quite off-putting. While the owner was kind and welcoming, I believe this experience does not belong on a food tour.
