Reviews
We thoroughly enjoyed sampling traditional Maine dishes while wandering around the Old Port and discovering its history. This was an excellent opportunity to experience a variety of meals from the locals' favorite establishments.
This tour was fantastic. I enjoyed sampling a variety of Portland's specialties. Our guide provided plenty of historical context about the region and its culinary landscape. I really appreciated the experience.
Ray was exceptional! He went above and beyond to locate the finest culinary spots for us and shared fascinating insights about Portland's history during the tour. The food and drinks were delicious, and he ensured we had an enjoyable experience. We highly recommend this tour!
Ray was very kind and knowledgeable. We visited three food spots and two dessert locations, all serving generous portions. The sidewalks were cleared despite recent heavy snowfall, making winter a great time to experience this without the crowds.
It's best to skip breakfast before embarking on this tour. A later starting time would have been preferable since we were enjoying beer at 11:00 AM.
We visited Maine during the very early season (March 20th-24th) and sought an activity. Most places were closed, especially midweek, but we stumbled upon a food walking tour and were thrilled to partake. My wife and I ended up alone on the tour, enjoying around 3 hours with our guide, Ray Sapirstein. His enthusiasm for Portland and food was clear, and he kept us entertained with engaging stories throughout the tour. As a PhD historian, Ray highlighted interesting facts about the area, such as how the hilly roads were originally sand dunes. Ray took us to local gems we would have missed, like Andy's Old Port Pub, where we had the best haddock taco ever and enjoyed the craft beer selection. Next, we visited Gilbert's Chowder House, where the seafood chili exceeded expectations. At Harbor Fish Market, we witnessed the fresh fish preparations, showcasing the high-quality standards. Then, we went to Rigby House, described as a coffee shop and workspace, where we tried what Ray claimed was the best lobster roll in Maine; the local bread was exceptional. We also sampled their blueberry ale, a unique find thanks to Ray's local insights. We rounded out the day at Dean's Sweet shop for truffles and Fiasco's Gelato. The lobster gelato was unusual, but the whoopie pie and blueberry gelatos were outstanding. Overall, this 3-hour tour, with all food included, left us satisfied. The walking distance was manageable, and when we felt the chill, Ray kindly took us into Gritty's for a warm-up.
Ray proved to be an excellent guide, providing us with valuable insights into Portland's culinary scene and history. We enjoyed a wide variety of delicious food along the way. I highly recommend this experience.
The food was enjoyable, but the tour guide Anne spent too much time talking about her personal life. I wanted to focus on the cuisine and learn about Portland, not hear stories about her son's brewery visit or the "Chocolate Pilot" from Germany.
Book this tour with Ray during your next visit to Portland. It was the highlight of my birthday experience. Ray shared so much knowledge, and we truly loved all the delicious food.
I enjoyed every moment of this tour. Our guide was fantastic, the food was superb, and I learned a lot about Portland, Maine. I strongly recommend this experience to anyone who can go. It's an excellent way to get to know the area. You won't be disappointed.
