Our experience was a delightful insight into Vanuatun culture. We were picked up promptly, and after about 40 minutes, we reached Eden River. Everything was well-organized, and we enjoyed making Simboro, a steamed roll of manioc wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in coconut milk. While it was being prepared, we explored their orchards and vegetable garden, even picking some starfruit to accompany our lunch, which was tasty. On our return to the ship, we took a route through the main town, but unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to shop. Perhaps next time.
This experience was far more than a typical cooking class. It was an engaging way to explore the traditions and culinary practices of Vanuatu led by a knowledgeable local guide. She demonstrated how to prepare a dish using techniques from her community, sharing stories and insights about customs throughout. As the food cooked, we toured the area where the ingredients were grown. Afterward, we enjoyed the meal we had prepared. Eden on the River provides much more than just cooking lessons; we highly suggest bringing swimwear and allowing extra time to swim in the river and explore the property.
This is one of the finest accommodations in Efate, conveniently located near Port Vila and attractions on the southeast coast, with numerous activities available right on-site. The lodging itself was lovely, featuring charming little houses equipped for comfortable living and self-catering if desired. There are also delicious, simple meals at the restaurant; I particularly enjoyed the banana cake, pesto toasties, and BBQ chicken pizza. The activities were enjoyable, and the staff was very helpful. I really appreciated the cooking class, where I connected with other day visitors and delighted in our tasty simboro dish. The bridge walk and zip line were exciting and stood out as highlights. The best part of my three-night stay was my daily strolls along the river with Rosey and Snowflake, the retreat dogs, who accompanied me, guided me along the right paths, and happily relaxed with me into the evenings, making me feel safe and at home.
