What's the itinerary?+
• The audio guides will provide commentary based on your GPS location, allowing you to tailor your itinerary along the tour route according to your interests and time constraints. • Although it is not officially part of the national park, Dungeness Spit is an intriguing location worth exploring. It stretches 5 miles into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, making it the longest sandspit in the world, growing approximately 14 feet annually. You may walk its entire length to see the lighthouse, though it is not necessary to appreciate the unique environment. The spit serves as a refuge for wildlife, with 90 bird species known to nest here, along with the possibility of spotting harbor seals, orcas, and minke whales. Small mammals, especially rodents, and even deer and skunks may also be observed. • Elwha Valley, located near Port Angeles, is a short detour that leads to Madison Falls, where you can enjoy an easy walk. The area also features remnants of early homesteader buildings. This valley is significant for its ecological recovery, as two dams were removed to restore the river’s natural flow and allow salmon to access their spawning grounds again, enriching the valley with fertile deposits. • Visit a unique temperate rainforest where giant trees grow amidst lush greenery, moss, and ferns. This vivid setting is home to wildlife such as elk and black bears, and it is advisable to spend at least 2 hours in this part of Olympic National Park. • Hurricane Ridge is the most accessible alpine region within the park, reached by an 18-mile drive starting from Port Angeles. The summit offers stunning vistas and a range of hiking trails for diverse experiences. For a less strenuous option, Meadow Trails is suggested, but there are also many challenging trails available. • Taking an hour or more to drive the loop around Lake Quinault is enjoyable. The lake, formed by a glacial gouge, is continually fed by glacial runoff and contained by a moraine. The route offers a variety of hiking opportunities along with amenities such as lodging, restaurants, campgrounds, and a small museum. • We will traverse a verdant area filled with large trees, where the world's largest Sitka spruce can be found. The rainforest ecosystem bears similarities to Hoh and typically receives around 12 feet of rain each year. • Rialto Beach is renowned for its sunset views, but it is a lovely destination at any time, particularly on warm, sunny days. The beach features rock pillars and a half-mile walk will lead you to the Hole-in-the-Wall arch, which will eventually form two more pillars or haystacks. Tide pooling along the beach is also a notable activity. • Access to the beach is straightforward, with parking available directly off the highway, leading to an easy walk onto the beach. Abbey Island, a large sandstone block, can be reached at low tide, but ensure to return before the tide rises again. While finding actual rubies is unlikely, you can search for almandite, a type of garnet that is attractive yet not precious. • A worthwhile side trip takes you off Highway 101 into one of Olympic's beautiful valleys. If your visit coincides with salmon spawning season, you may witness them navigating the Sol Duc River. A stunning triple-tier waterfall, Sol Duc Falls, can be found less than a mile from the parking area. Conclude your visit with a soak in the soothing hot mineral pools at the Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort.
