1Nearby Plovdiv is located Asenovgrad town, better known as the Bulgarian Jerusalem. It is also called the city of brides, but its symbol is the medieval fortress named after the Bulgarian king Ivan-Asen II. Asen’s fortress still controls the passage through the Rhodope Mountains, leading us to the Bachkovo monastery – the second biggest in Bulgaria and the most impressive with its miraculous stories. Once entered in this area, you’ll definitely hear about Mavrud – man, hero or wine? – Many legends are speaking about one fabulous wine – the Mavrud from Asenovgrad!

5Travel through the notorious Valley of Roses to discover 4 of the most impressive monuments of Bulgaria from 3 historic periods. All of them are located on top of or at the foot of the longest mountain range in Bulgaria - The Balkan Range. Buzludzha is the most impressive monument of communist Bulgaria (from 1944 to 1989). Shipka Monument of Freedom and Shipka Memorial Church were built after and in memory of the Russian Turkish War of Liberation from 1877-1878. Golyama Kosmatka Thracian Tomb/temple was erected around 5-4 century BC by the ancient Thracian civilization inhabiting in huge numbers the Balkans at that time.
6Travel through the notorious Rose Valley where the best rose oil in the world is being produced. In Kazanlak discover the unique Rose Museum and the local museum of history keeping more than 50 000 original exponents. The museum protects, examines and popularizes the entire rich historical heritage of the Kazanlak region, including all Thracian tombs and treasures from the Valley of the Thracian kings. In the same valley visit the first Bulgarian UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site – the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak (from 4 century B. C.) and the impressive Golyama Kosmatka temple/tomb (from 5 century B. C.). Finally visit the outstanding Christian Orthodox temple named Shipka Memorial Church built in memory of the soldiers who died during the Russian Turkish War of Liberation from 1877-1878.
7Make the most of your stay in Plovdiv with this guided walking city tour. Plovdiv is one of the oldest settlements in the world, having emerged on the three adjacent hills – the beginning of its history dates back to 4,000 years BC. It has preserved Thracian, Roman and Bulgarian heritage from different epochs. There will be a 2- hour walking tour in the heart of the town and you will learn lots of historical facts and legends while exploring its most interesting sightseeing places. You will see the Roman Theater and parts of the Roman Stadium. Walk through the longest pedestrian street in Europe. Explore the magnificent Revival old town with its unique colorful houses from the 19th century. This year Plovdiv is the current European capital of culture. Important- please wear comfortable walking shoes (cubble stone streets).
8From Plovdiv we head towards the Rhodope Mountains passing through the pretty town of Assenovgrad. Nearby we will see the remarkable remains of King Ivan Assen’s fortress – a wise ruler of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. There we are to find an ancient church dating from the 13th century painted with some authentic pieces of iconography as well as the stone made inscription carved by King Ivan Assen. Next we go deeper in the Rhodope Mountains towards the picturesque Bachkovo monastery. The cloister is the second largest in Bulgaria, founded in 1083 and one of the most sacred places in the Bulgarian history. We can stop on the way if you wish. You can begin at the Roman Forum of Philippopolis, the political and social heart of the ancient city, surrounded by columns and civic buildings. Nearby, discover the impressive mosaics of the Roman Basilica of Philippopolis. Continue through Tsar Simeon Garden and the Singing Fountains, then explore the Roman Stadium of Philippopolis and the still-active Roman Theatre of Philippopolis. Walk the Old Town streets to see Lamartine House, Klianti House, the Regional Ethnographic Museum Plovdiv, and Balabanov House.
