Falling Water, the remarkable architectural masterpiece by Frank Lloyd Wright, truly deserved its praise. The building, its surroundings, and the staff made the 10-hour drive from Connecticut worthwhile. My family had also visited in June and suggested we see Kentuck Knob, which we were glad to experience. While Kentuck Knob has a unique atmosphere, it similarly showcases Wright's connection with the landscape. Be sure to take the walk to the knob hills and valley overlook for an incredible view.
My husband and I toured Fallingwater, and it's a must-see if you're nearby. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for a wealthy Pittsburgh businessman, the home's setting is breathtaking, especially in October with the autumn foliage. Nestled in a rocky, forested area over a waterfall, it truly feels secluded. Be aware that you need to purchase a timed entry in advance, as they tend to sell out. We walked from the visitors center with a guide to explore the house. The visitors center also features a nice souvenir shop and a small café. The drive can be challenging, so plan your route ahead of time and consider printing directions, as cell service and GPS can be unreliable. Checking their website is advisable. The experience is definitely worth the effort.
Laurel Highlands is absolutely stunning, making it the ideal setting for the remarkable architectural designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. We bought our tickets separately and were unsure if there’s a discount for combined purchases, but I highly recommend upgrading to the premium tours for both homes, as they are well worth it. Each residence is distinct, showcasing incredible architecture and treasures both inside and out. Our visit to Kentuck Knob felt like a private experience with just three of us on the tour, and our guide provided valuable insights, answering all our questions with fascinating facts that only the tour could reveal. The grounds at both locations were immaculate, merging nature and architecture seamlessly. Visiting Falling Water on a rainy day enhanced the experience—the high water levels created a cozy atmosphere indoors while the rain fell outside, making it breathtakingly beautiful. This has been on my bucket list for years, and it truly was a dream come true. The Ohiopyle area offers a wealth of activities like hiking, fishing, rafting, and simply enjoying nature’s tranquility. We had planned our trip primarily to see Falling Water but were pleasantly surprised to discover the Kentuck Knob tour, which was an added bonus along with the stunning scenery.
We started our trip at Fallingwater, where we opted for the extended tour after reserving three months in advance. The visitor center features a restaurant, shop, and restrooms. The design, by the son’s partner, is stunning, and don’t miss the path leading to the lower viewpoint for a great look at the house and waterfall below. On the second day, we visited Kentuck Knob, which proved to be just as fascinating as Fallingwater, with breathtaking views from the grassy area. Be sure to take the wooded path back to see the various art installations throughout the grounds. The visitor center also includes a shop, an ice cream stand run by the owners, and restrooms.
George guided us to Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, providing an engaging and informative experience for 8 hours. Initially, we were uncertain about this lively older gentleman with his well-used vehicle and binders, but George proved to be a fantastic storyteller with a genuine love for Pittsburgh and Frank Lloyd Wright. His passion is contagious. During the 90-minute journey to Fallingwater, we hardly glanced out the window as George captivated us with tales of Wright and the Kaufmann family, along with the creation of Fallingwater. His extensive connections at Fallingwater truly benefited us; despite my friend's last-minute decision to join, we found all tickets sold out online. However, George's relationship with the staff led to a lucky cancellation, securing a ticket for my companion. It was clear that the team went above and beyond for George. On the way back, the discussion continued to be lively and packed with information about Pittsburgh's history to the present. George was also an excellent driver, ensuring I felt safe the entire time. Thank you for a memorable day, George!
We had an amazing day with George, who shared fascinating stories about Frank Lloyd Wright, Pittsburgh, and Pennsylvania. His extensive knowledge and engaging storytelling made the experience memorable. The car had its shortcomings, but the overall experience overshadowed that. This tour will always stand out as one of the highlights of our vacation in the USA.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with George, who provided extensive information about Frank Lloyd Wright and Pittsburgh. He was quite entertaining and punctual for the tours at both homes, which were very detailed and fascinating. It was wonderful to finally visit these remarkable houses.
Both Ochisuiso and Kentuck Knob were beautiful and enjoyable places, surrounded by lush greenery. The guide was very friendly, contributing to a fantastic day overall.
The tour guide was excellent and very flexible with timing and pick-up. I gained a lot of knowledge, particularly about how cool Pittsburgh is, but also about much more.
Visiting the Knob's house first is a great idea, as you'll experience a lot of it again at Fallingwater. It's unfortunate that photography is not allowed in the first house, while it's permitted at Fallingwater. This limitation reduces the overall excitement of the visit.
