The tour was fascinating and provided a unique insight into the process, regardless of whether you fly fish. Additionally, the shop gives a $5 coupon for the retail section as a gratitude gesture, making the experience effectively free and definitely worthwhile.
After moving to Pagosa Springs, my partner Anna and I started exploring our new area. As a fly fisherman, I visited the local fly shops and was captivated by PJ’s Fine Bamboo Fly Rods on a crisp fall day. The display of rods was stunning, and PJ took the time to explain the unique features of each one. He showcased some custom rods in progress, crafted from bamboo stalks into exquisite fly fishing tools. We discovered that PJ and Rosanna hold fly rod building classes monthly. Roughly two weeks later, we returned to the shop and were warmly welcomed like old friends. Anna enrolled me in a six-day class in April for my important birthday. Over the following months, PJ guided me in choosing the perfect fly rod tailored to my fishing style. We decided on an 8-foot, 3 weight, two-piece rod, which I completed in the class and exclusively used last summer. It casts beautifully, allowing me to catch small brook trout in tiny creeks and up to 16-inch brown trout on the San Juan River. In December, Anna gifted me a second class, where I crafted an 8-foot, 6 weight rod for larger waters and bigger fish. My chance encounter with PJ and Rosanna, along with learning about bamboo and the history of bamboo fly rods, has been a remarkable journey. Their enthusiasm for creating beautiful fishing tools has truly enriched the experience. Perhaps I will build a third rod in the future.
