• Following morning pickup from your hotel lobby in Orchha, you will travel approximately 106 miles (172 km) to Khajuraho in a private vehicle. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your personal guide at the Western Group of Temples, a historic world heritage site in Khajuraho. Of the 85 originally constructed temples, mainly built of hard river sandstone, around 20 are still in good condition. The temples are elaborately adorned with various sculptures, many of which are sensual or sexually explicit. These temples are grouped into three complexes, with the western complex being the largest and most renowned, featuring the impressive Kandariya Mahadev Temple, which stands 31m high with multiple porches and turrets ending in a spire. It is often regarded as one of the finest-preserved temples from India's medieval period. • Khajuraho is a UNESCO world heritage site situated in central India, well-known for its intricately sculpted temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Jain patriarchs. Once a significant capital of the Chandela kings between the 9th and 11th centuries CE, Khajuraho covered about 21 sq.km and consisted of around 85 temples developed by several rulers between 950 and 1050 AD. The Chandela dynasty shifted to hill forts during a time of chaos in the late 11th century. Khajuraho remained religiously significant until the 14th century and was noted by ibn Batuta. However, it was largely forgotten thereafter, with its remoteness likely protecting it from the destruction often inflicted on Hindu monuments by Muslim conquerors. In 1838, British army captain T.S. Burt, while working with the Asiatic Society in Calcutta, stumbled upon leads that led to the rediscovery of the temple complex hidden in the jungle in Khajuraho.
