• Following pickup from your hotel lobby in Orchha by a personal chauffeur, travel approximately 150 kilometres (3 hours) to the historic town of Chanderi, which dates back to the 11th century. A local guide will greet you upon arrival to show you around various monuments. Chanderi, surrounded by hills, lakes, and forests, has a rich history linked to the Malwa sultans and Bundela Rajputs. Located in the Ashoknagar District of Madhya Pradesh, it is strategically placed between Bundelkhand and Malwa regions. In the 11th century, it held a significant role along the trade routes of Central India, and during Emperor Akbar's rule, about 1200 baolis (step wells) were documented in Chanderi. This town features a remarkable concentration of historic monuments, making it a notable tourist destination. Approximately 375 monuments can be explored, with several prominent sites such as Babur’s Mosque, Khuni Darwaza, Jama and Juma Masjid, Badal Mahal, and the Nizamuddin Tombs. Koshak Mahal stands as a towering building with arches and courtyards, while Kati Ghati Gate serves as the historic entry point to Chanderi from Malwa and Bundelkhand. The Khandagiri Jain temples, carved from rock around 700 years ago, highlight Chanderi's significance as a center of Jain culture, attracting practitioners for at least 900 years. In addition to its historical significance, Chanderi is renowned for its hand-woven Chanderi saris. Over 50 percent of the town's 40,000 residents are involved in weaving, producing saris and other fabric items. After touring the renowned monuments, enjoy a home-cooked vegetarian lunch featuring local Bundelkhand cuisine at a picnic spot. The return trip to Orchha will include stops to appreciate the scenic landscapes of Central India. Your chauffeur will then drop you off either at your hotel in Orchha or at the Jhansi or Lalitpur Railway Station, depending on your preference. • Chanderi Fort, a large Mughal fort, towers over the charming old town of Chanderi. The principal entrance to the fort is referred to as the "Khooni Darwaza." Situated on a hill 71 meters above the town, the fortification walls were mainly built by the Muslim rulers of Chanderi. To the southwest lies a notable gateway known as Katti-Ghatti, carved through a hillside. • It is believed that prisoners were thrown from the fort's height at Khooni Darwaza, their bodies meeting a devastating fate below, which is how the name "Khooni Darwaza," meaning 'gate soaked in blood,' originated. • Its significance as a landmark is evident, as its shape is often used as a seal for letters sent from Chanderi, and it's also the stamp applied by the Madhya Pradesh Handloom Department to the famous Chanderi hand-woven sarees. • Reports suggest that when the first level was completed, the builders encountered challenges in raising the heavy stone blocks to the second storey. They resolved this by burying the first storey under soil to create an incline for transporting the blocks upwards. Each floor was constructed similarly until the earth was eventually cleared away to reveal the entire structure.
