Volcán Maderas
Ometepe, Nicaragua

Volcán Maderas is a dormant volcano that rises 1,440 metres on the western side of Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua. Its lush cloud forest is home to diverse wildlife and is often shrouded in mist, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The summit offers stunning views of the island’s other volcano, Concepción, and the lake below.
Hiking to the summit typically takes six to eight hours round trip, best attempted early in the day to avoid afternoon rains. The trail winds through dense vegetation, where you may encounter howler monkeys and various bird species. Take care on the steeper sections, and appreciate the tranquility of the forest.
