• The Taj Mahal, known as the "Crown of the Palaces," is an ivory-white marble mausoleum located on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, India. Commissioned in 1632 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who ruled from 1628 to 1658, it was built to enshrine the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. While the main structure was completed by 1643, additional work continued for ten more years. In 1983, the Taj Mahal was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its significance as "the jewel of Muslim art in India." • Agra Fort is a historical structure situated in Agra, India. It served as the principal residence for the Mughal emperors until 1638, when the capital was moved to Delhi. Also inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, Agra Fort is better described as a walled city. This fort is unique in that it was inhabited by all early Mughal emperors and is built on an ancient site, previously known as Badalgarh.
