We opted for the afternoon tour and found our time on the island enjoyable. The guide was quite knowledgeable, though it was sometimes challenging to follow him. While a guide isn't essential for exploring the elephant caves since there are information boards available, this tour comes highly recommended for a deeper understanding of the culture and history.
We arranged a tour to Elephanta Island, anticipating a meeting with the guide at India Gateway, but no one came. They instructed us to take the boat on our own, which we could have done without a tour. Once at the island, the guide spent less than 30 minutes discussing the caves, rushed us through, and then left to collect other tourists without returning. We spent 6,000 INR for an experience we could have easily managed ourselves; it didn't feel like a real tour.
