Captain Bryan guided our morning tour, and he was fantastic. His extensive knowledge was shared in an engaging and educational manner, providing us with great insights into the history and development of Mount Pleasant.
I had a great time on this walking tour. Capt. Bryan has extensive knowledge of Charleston's history, shrimping practices, and modern trends. He was flexible and made sure we had a wonderful experience. It was disappointing to discover that many local restaurants don’t serve local shrimp. The tour included views of historic homes, stunning plants, and a demonstration on shrimp catching with a net. Bryan was fantastic, and I would highly recommend this tour. The treat at the end was a lovely touch.
The Shem Creek History & Shrimp Walking Tour was the absolute highlight of our weekend in Charleston, which is surprising considering I didn’t think I’d be so drawn to shrimp logistics. Captain Bryan guided us through the historic neighborhood, sharing the struggles early Charlestonians faced, including attacks from the Spanish and French in the 17th and 18th centuries, pirate kidnappings, and multiple devastating fires. Honestly, the city has endured enough tumult for at least three Netflix series. A fun tidbit: the area was colonized back in 1680, making me feel both young and a bit inadequate in history trivia. Next, we delved into the shrimping industry, learning what drove its expansion—such as advancements in refrigeration, the interstate system, and WWII, which seemingly required shrimp-related infrastructure. Our visit to one of the few remaining shrimp processing plants provided a sobering look at how global competition has reshaped what was once a thriving local sector. We also headed to the docks to check out a shrimp trawler, where Captain Bryan explained the shrimp-catching process in detail, including the escape device for larger sea creatures to avoid being caught. The tour concluded with us learning to throw a shrimp net, which is trickier than it looks, and I gained a newfound admiration for those who work in this field. If you think a history and shrimp tour might be dull, believe me, it’s anything but. Captain Bryan is engaging and humorous, making even shrimp economics interesting. When we come back to Charleston, we’ll definitely seek him out for another tour.
