I arranged a hike on the Root Glacier with Johnny, and I'm really pleased I decided to join a guided tour instead of going alone. Johnny was an excellent guide, patient and informative. With just the two of us at 8 AM, he led me to all the perfect spots for photos. He pointed out remnants of the Gold Rush on the mountain nearby, which was fascinating. I captured some stunning pictures of the ice fall and various glacial formations, and he even assisted me in filling my Camelback with refreshing glacier water. His knowledge about the area, the Root Glacier, the Kennicott Glacier, and local history was impressive. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience, and I appreciated having such a cool and easygoing guide like Johnny.
Jeremiah served as an excellent guide, sharing a wealth of local insights and ensuring we felt at ease during our hike. Since only 1 in 4 of us had experience with crampons, he took the time to ensure a proper fit and taught us how to use them. I would definitely recommend this experience.
We took the Root Glacier Hike with our daughter and her friend, who was visiting Alaska for the first time. Even though we live nearby and have been to McCarthy numerous times, this was our first experience at Root Glacier. Walking on the glacier was a memorable highlight for everyone. The hike itself was fantastic, and the glacier was breathtaking. Our guide, Johnny, was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. He even captured beautiful photos for us with our cameras and phones. We noticed larger groups from other companies, so we were grateful to choose McCarthy River Tours; it was just the four of us with our guide, allowing us to explore at our own pace. Thank you, Johnny!
An exceptionally well-managed experience that felt almost spiritual. The glacier hike was breathtaking, and our guide was not only knowledgeable and entertaining but also prioritized safety. I highly recommend it!
The glacier walk was incredible, especially with the beautiful weather we had in late July. The views of the surrounding mountains and the varied shapes and colors of the ice and crevasses were breathtaking. Although it was warm on the hike to the glacier, it got much cooler once we arrived, so I recommend bringing at least two layers to adjust to the temperature change.
I had a memorable time on the glacier and gaining insights about glaciers. Our guide, Macie, was very knowledgeable, and I’m really thankful we had her with us.
Hiking to and on the glacier was a fantastic experience for us. We made a last-minute booking due to weather changes, and they were very flexible in accommodating us. Our guide, John, was excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed our day with him. He provided us valuable insights about the area and glaciers, equipped us properly, and gave clear instructions on safety. Overall, it was a wonderful adventure, and we're thrilled we participated in it.
It was a fantastic day spent hiking to the glacier and exploring it. Our guide was both friendly and incredibly knowledgeable.
The experience offers breathtaking views of an authentic glacier. The hike through the historic mining town of Kennicott leads you to the base of the root glacier, where you can wear supplied crampons to explore the stunning white ice glacier, with the added option to swim in a glacial pool. Informed guides provide insights about the area and the history of the former mining town.
Hiking the Root Glacier was both thrilling and slightly intimidating as our first glacier adventure. However, having an approachable and knowledgeable guide like Veronica from McCarthy River Tours enhanced the experience immensely. She equipped us for the journey and offered essential guidance throughout. Staying with us every step of the way, Veronica shared her expertise, ensuring both safety and an engaging experience. Without her, we wouldn't have explored as far or as safely. She truly made this hike memorable and enjoyable.
