This guided trek starts at the Sassi of Matera, taking you through the scenic canyon of the Regional Park of Rupestrian Churches. Following itinerary n. 406, the route winds through ancient landscapes rich in history and natural beauty.
A highlight of the journey is the exhilarating crossing of the Tibetan Bridge, suspended high between the rocks. Claudio, our knowledgeable tour guide, has deep personal ties to Matera through his grandparents. He led us through the gorge, over the bridge, and into the cave dwellings, where we explored stone churches and original frescoes. The climb to the top rewarded us with breathtaking views of the city. Be prepared for a challenging hike and wear sturdy shoes—some people were in flip-flops. There are some scrambles and if you're afraid of heights, this might not be for you, as there are few guardrails, apart from the swinging bridge. At the summit, we had the option to take transportation back, but we opted to retrace our steps. Don’t forget to bring water; the views of Matera from here are unparalleled.
The experience we had touring Matera was exceptional, largely due to the professionalism of our guide, Imma. We explored the history, traditions, and living conditions of ancient farmers in comfort via minibus, with stops at key sites. I highly suggest this tour.
Claudio is an excellent guide—friendly, considerate, and well-informed. The hike itself is fantastic, offering numerous interesting sights including the Tibetan bridge, cave churches, local flora, the river, stunning views of the Sassi, and more. Be sure to wear hiking shoes and bring water, as this trek can be quite demanding.
Matera is a stunning and enchanting city with its white caves nestled in the hillside. The cuisine is delectable, the artisanal craftsmanship is impressive, and the locals are welcoming. Plus, it has a fascinating history.
This trip was fantastic, largely thanks to our guide Claudio, who was both knowledgeable and entertaining. Be prepared for a solid hike with appropriate shoes and water, but with Claudio leading, you are well taken care of.
In mid-August, we took part in a guided tour of the Sassi of Matera in the morning, led by an engaging and knowledgeable guide who shared the area's history and unique features. We were pleased to join the evening tour of the Murge park and rock churches, which provided a stunning view of the Sassi as the sun set. Again, our guide was skilled and enthusiastic. We also appreciate the team's flexibility in organizing the evening tour despite the severe storm that occurred just beforehand.
We enjoyed our stay in the stunning Suite la Stalla, nestled in the heart of the Sassi, which was both rustic and captivating. The accommodation was not only comfortable but also ideally located for sightseeing. Our package included a welcome drink and breakfast at Local MoVado in Piazza Duomo, featuring typical cuisine and generous portions. In the afternoon, we were guided by Michele, who was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, as we explored the park of the Murgia materana, complete with Tibetan bridges, aromatic herbs, wild plants, breathtaking views, and impressive rock churches. Overall, we experienced two exciting and romantic days, thanks to the excellent organization by the Martulli Viaggi team.
This tour was amazing, and Mimma was an outstanding guide. She made our experience special, enjoyable, and truly memorable. I highly recommend this tour and suggest requesting Mimma as your guide.
The view of the stones of Matera was fascinating, but having Giusy as a guide made the experience truly magical.
The guided walking tour was very enjoyable, and our guide did an outstanding job.
