Reviews
This experience is definitely worth the cost. We took the tour during dusk, allowing us to view the city's main attractions beautifully illuminated at night. In just an hour, we covered all the key sites, including the old cave house, the Matera diorama, and a church. I highly recommend this tuk-tuk tour for a quick overview after a long day.
This experience was incredible! The wine was fairly priced, and our guide Peter had a wealth of knowledge, sharing insights about various wines and regions. This was our favorite tour, with generous wine portions that were perfect for savoring the flavors. The food complemented each wine beautifully and was quite tasty.
Our driver was wonderful, and we really enjoyed discovering the town together. I would certainly recommend this experience. The highlight was the cave dwelling museum, where we learned about the poignant history of the people in Matera. Their living conditions were unimaginable by modern standards, yet they were reluctant to leave for contemporary housing, fearing the loss of their traditional way of life. A book titled “Christ stopped at Eboli” sheds light on the circumstances faced by residents in Matera, emphasizing the town's historical importance. After the 1950 relocation of townspeople, the old town was largely neglected, becoming a playground for local children, as one resident shared. It wasn't until its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993 that efforts began to revitalize it. Today, it is a stunning city to explore.
The experience felt brief. The driver had limited English skills and was rushing due to the rain. Additionally, the audio was difficult to hear.
Perfect for those who have trouble walking, this experience allows you to explore this hidden gem with a very caring and friendly guide.
The view of Sassi and the cave house was spectacular, along with several other significant sights. It was wonderful to experience the historic locations without extensive walking, with chances to step out for photos, and a friendly driver/guide accompanying us throughout the journey.
The standard tuk-tuk tour felt like a scam and was not worth the time. We were jostled around without receiving much information about Matera, and the itinerary only included three photo stops that felt rushed.
A 45-minute tour in the Ape calessino allowed us to explore the highlights of beautiful Matera. We visited the sasso Caveoso, sasso Barisano, numerous churches, and old houses carved into the rock. The conversation with Mr. Antonio and his colleague about the city's history and the dedication of the locals to its enhancement made the experience truly enjoyable. Matera, especially when considering its transformation over the last thirty years, deserves to be called "the pride of Italy."
This is a brief introduction to Matera. It's suitable for those with walking accessibility concerns. For a more detailed experience, consider opting for a longer tour.
Our time in Matera and Sassi was truly exceptional. It was a fantastic and efficient way to explore the ancient city. Our driver was incredibly friendly and polite. I highly recommend this experience.
