Five to six hours exploring Montecristi and Pacoche Rain Forest with a local guide, observing wildlife and visiting hat-making workshops.
This tour spans five to six hours and showcases the rich culture, traditions, and natural beauty of the Montecristi region and Pacoche Rain Forest. You’ll have the opportunity to see howler monkeys and diverse wildlife, visit the fish market to observe the daily catch, and explore the Ciudad Alfaro museum.
The itinerary includes demonstrations on how traditional Panama hats are made, along with insights into crafting buttons from a unique palm tree native to tropical areas. Note that an 800-metre section of the trail in Pacoche is strenuous, so it’s advised to wear running shoes and carry mosquito repellent. This tour suits those interested in local culture, wildlife, and handicrafts.
Reviews
The tour offers much more than a series of typical routes and repetitive facts. Fernando, our guide, was passionate about his work, showcasing his punctuality, friendliness, and knowledge throughout our personalized experience. We explored the coast, a seafood market, a shipyard, the rainforest, and visited hat and chocolate factories. Highlights included witnessing a freshly caught cherna, observing carpenters polishing a wooden boat skeleton, spotting a group of shy howler monkeys in the jungle, watching a demonstration of Panama hut construction, and enjoying pure chocolate at a craft factory. In just a few hours, the thoughtful interactions made for a truly introspective journey that transcended the usual tourist experience.
The tour was comparable in price and scope to what the cruise offered, but the small group made it a better experience. We particularly enjoyed the stops, especially the hat factory. Since the museum was closed, the guide arranged an alternative visit to a family business specializing in vegetable ivory buttons. I would have preferred a quicker pace on the rainforest hike, as it was hot and there were no animals visible at that time. Additionally, with two ships docked, it would have been beneficial to group passengers by ship, especially because we provided our arrival details when booking. The departure was delayed by 45 minutes while waiting for the other ship, and we ended up leaving without some guests after that wait. I suggest the company should group by ship, allow for a 15-minute grace period, and then proceed. Alejandro was an excellent guide, both on the bus and during our visits.
I had the best tour guide ever; they were extremely friendly and engaged in great conversations. I wholeheartedly recommend this trip. It truly was the best tour experience I have ever had.
Fernando proved to be an excellent host and a wonderful representative for Monte, Ecuador. We strongly suggest choosing Fernando for your experience. When we return to Ecuador, we will certainly look for him for our next adventure.
I had a wonderful day filled with enjoyable and intriguing experiences. Everything about Manta and its surroundings was truly delightful.
This was an ideal experience during our brief stop in Manta. We enjoyed a great combination of fascinating sightseeing locations.
Mariss, our guide, was wonderful—extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. We particularly loved the fish market and the stroll through the preserve, where the guide was also outstanding. However, the hat store in Montecristi was fascinating, though it felt a bit drawn out.
This tour was fantastic! It provided a wonderful overview of Ecuador and the Manta region, perfect for first-time visitors. The guide and driver were knowledgeable and engaging. We arrived by cruise ship and strongly recommend it to fellow travelers, as it was well-organized and more affordable than a cruise ship excursion.
The Paccoche rainforest didn't have much to see, and the fish market was just okay. However, the team was well organized and provided a good experience overall.
Be sure to take mosquito repellent for the rainforest. The tour and our guide were excellent and very informative, allowing us to engage in a variety of activities. The fish market was fascinating, though we lingered there for too long. It's advisable to pick up a snack at the rainforest gift shop since options for food are limited. It would be beneficial to have more places to grab snacks or lunch along the route. Perhaps the hat demonstration site could collaborate with the empanada vendor across the street to cater to the large groups visiting.
