• The Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple was constructed by King Kulasekara Pandya between 1190 and 1216 CE. The surviving main portions of the three-storeyed gopura at the Sundareswarar Shrine entrance and the central section of the Goddess Meenakshi Shrine are among the earliest elements of the temple. There are also shrines (Koil) for Natarajar and Surya adjacent to the main temple, as well as Ayyanar to the east, Vinayagar to the south, Kariamalperumal to the west, and Kali to the north. He also established a Mahamandapam. Kulasekara Pandya was a poet and composed a poem titled Ambikai Malai about Meenakshi. The gopuram is named after the frescoes and reliefs illustrating various secular and religious aspects of Hindu culture. Maravarman Sundara Pandyan II later added a pillared corridor to the Sundareswara shrine along with the Sundara Pandyan Mandapam. The temple serves as a significant pilgrimage site within the Shaivism tradition, dedicated to Meenakshi Devi and Shiva, but it also includes Vishnu in many stories, sculptures, and rituals as he is regarded as Meenakshi's brother. The daily religious activities begin early in the morning, referred to as Thirupalli Ezhuchi – morning prayer or opening ceremony. The night ceremony is known as the closing ceremony or bed-chamber ceremony. The temple typically operates from 05:00 to 12:30 and from 16:00 to 20:30.
