• Located north of the Indus River on a hill, less than 20 kilometers from Leh town, Thiksey Monastery was constructed in 1430 AD and is part of the Gelukpa Order of Buddhism. Within the monastery, there is a temple called Lakhang Nyerma dedicated to Goddess Dorje Chenmo, along with several other shrines in the complex. Thiksey Gompa hosts the Gustor ritual from the 17th to 19th of September each year, which includes a sacred mask dance. The Maitreya Buddha statue on site is possibly the most photographed representation of the future Buddha, standing at 15 meters (49 feet) tall and taking over four years to complete. • Shey Monastery and Palace are situated 15 kilometers from Leh town along the Leh - Manali road. Established in the 16th century, the monastery houses the Du-Khang, which features an almost 10-meter high copper statue of Lord Buddha. The Shey Palace was built by King Deledan Nagmyal and is known for having the largest victory stupa in Leh, with the top crafted from pure gold. The royal family resided in Shey Palace until 1834, after which they moved to Stok Palace. The Archaeological Survey of India has taken over the preservation of Shey Palace. • The palace oversees the town, resembling a sentinel. Inside, there are ancient wall paintings illustrating the life of Buddha. Following the royal family's relocation, the palace fell into disrepair but has since been restored by the Archaeological Survey of India and is now a popular tourist site offering a panoramic view of Leh and the surrounding region.
