The journey to Virginia City was enjoyable, but the description could be clearer. We anticipated a longer train ride, but it was only 0.9 miles, not 9 miles. However, the shuttle driver was excellent and very knowledgeable. Virginia City itself was impressive! We spotted wild mustangs and numerous mines, and the Bucket of Blood Saloon stood out as my favorite.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our Train Ride experience in Virginia City, Nevada. The emcee was engaging and well-informed. Should we return to the area, we would happily do this again, especially considering the excellent value. We also loved exploring Virginia City!
The excursion was somewhat misleading. We expected a longer sightseeing train ride, but it turned out to be just a 5-mile journey back and forth, followed by a three-hour stop in Virginia City.
I cannot recommend this tour. There was excessive waiting; we spent a lot of time sitting on benches while waiting for the bus. At the Golden Nugget, we had to wait for someone who was in line at Starbucks. The guide also dropped us off across the street instead of turning the bus around. I won’t do this again.
The driver was very knowledgeable about the region, which made the bus ride enjoyable, and we even sang along. Our trip to Carson City provided ample opportunities to explore, shop, and have lunch.
The journey was fantastic. Our driver provided insightful historical information during the trip, which was interesting. We arrived at our destination punctually, and the train ride was enjoyable.
The experience was certainly informative. The driver had a wealth of knowledge about the tour and entertained us with trivia. However, I anticipated a different experience. I believed the train ride would last several hours with views of Lake Tahoe and notable sites, but instead, we had about 1.5 hours on the bus round-trip and only around 30 minutes on the train. We were also dropped off at some nostalgic markets and shops, which was a nice touch. Making homemade candles was enjoyable, and interacting with the locals was pleasant.
The experience was both engaging and enlightening, with a driver/tour guide who demonstrated extensive knowledge. It was definitely a worthwhile investment.
The tour guide was fantastic and shared a lot of information. However, we spent a bit too much time in Virginia City. The church there was lovely to visit.
This experience isn’t a direct train trip to Virginia City; it begins with a 90-minute narrated bus tour from South Lake Tahoe. Our guide, Nevada Smith, was fantastic, sharing insights about the area's history as we passed through stunning mountain scenery, Genoa, and the desert. The brief train ride in Virginia City included fascinating information about the Comstock Lode and the railroad from the conductor, Don. Following that, we enjoyed three hours in Virginia City to explore, have lunch, and shop in this authentic "old west" town. I highly recommend visiting The Way It Was museum for its pioneer artifacts and interesting video, along with enjoying a meal at the Red Dog Saloon or the incredible iced coffee from Hi Me Cafe. There are plenty of gift shops with various souvenirs and unique items. Overall, I strongly suggest this excursion for those looking to experience a slice of the 1800s while still in modern times. It made for a perfect day trip from Tahoe.
