Two hours exploring the Jewish history of Pitigliano — the synagogue, restored ghetto, and new museum, with an English-speaking guide.
This private tour offers an insightful look into the Jewish history of Pitigliano, often referred to as 'Little Jerusalem'. Over two hours, you'll visit significant sites, including a restored synagogue and the underground ghetto, where you can see the original living quarters carved into the tufa rock.
The ghetto features a mikveh (ritual bath), an oven for unleavened bread, and a kosher wine cellar, among other historical spaces. Each location tells a part of the story of the Jewish families that settled here in the 16th century and thrived under the Orsini family's tolerance. An English-speaking guide will provide context and details throughout the tour, making the history come alive as you explore this unique area.
Reviews
Listening to the stories of the Jewish experience was deeply impactful. Elisabeth displayed extensive knowledge and shared numerous anecdotes with us.
I enjoyed a fantastic private tour with Roberta Marioni, exploring the historic centers and necropolis of Sovana and Pitigliano, as well as an intriguing walking tour of the Jewish ghetto. Roberta offered extensive knowledge about the region and tailored the experience to my preferences. I highly recommend her!
This tour provided a fantastic opportunity to learn about the local history in depth. Stefania demonstrated impressive knowledge across various topics, making it a very informative experience.
I was fascinated to learn that Jews had lived in Pitigliano for centuries, which motivated my visit. Though Roberta couldn't guide us due to a family matter, she arranged for Paolo to take over, and communication via WhatsApp was seamless. Paolo first showed us the ancient Etruscan caves, detailing their construction and history. We then drove into the town, where she shared insights into the Jewish presence in Pitigliano. We toured the Jewish quarter, including the synagogue and surrounding sites. Despite not being Jewish, Paolo had extensive knowledge of the Jewish experience there. We also meandered through the older parts of the city. I highly recommend visiting, but a car is necessary since it's quite distant from major cities in Tuscany.
