This was an enjoyable experience, but I recommend having some prior snorkeling experience. It's possible to use your own snorkel and mask to see the fish without swimming a long distance to the caves, which is located just off the cove's beach where sea lions gather. We were glad to have practiced with our gear before the tour. For beginners, it can feel odd to breathe only through your mouth. Our guide Jane was great; she highlighted a spiny lobster that I might have missed and shared plenty of information about the local marine life. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to explore the caves since there were many kayakers and the water grew choppy as the tide came in. Overall, it was a fun adventure, and we enjoyed observing the underwater life. However, it was somewhat stressful for us as two middle-aged adults. Jane was attentive and swam with us when she noticed we were falling behind, demonstrating her encouragement, knowledge, and friendliness. Given the swim distance and rising swells, we realized we may need to improve our fitness for a future visit.
Cass and Skyler were engaging and informative guides who helped my teenage daughters feel at ease and enjoy the experience. The snorkeling was definitely worth it, featuring good visibility, a variety of fish, and a unique cave experience.
Our guide, Skylar, was both skilled and enjoyable to be around. She connected well with my daughter, as they were the same age. We spotted sea lions, a garibaldi fish, and a ray. We even explored a cave!
I would not suggest this activity; it was a waste of money. My snorkeling experience was poor and felt unsafe due to the lack of safety measures. There was no support if someone struggled in the water, and the lack of things to see made it both disappointing and unsafe.
The snorkeling tour was amazing. Jane, our guide, was both knowledgeable and friendly, making the cave experience possible for us. We felt secure in the water with her guidance. We thoroughly enjoyed the outing and would gladly book with them again. A tip for future participants: bring $5 for tipping, as we had left our cash in the car for safety.
This snorkel tour, located outside La Jolla Cove, explores nearby caves. However, flotation devices are not provided. I would only recommend it to strong, confident swimmers. If you're not accustomed to physical exertion or feel anxious about the ocean, this may not be the right activity for you.
Maddie proved to be an excellent guide, being patient, encouraging, and supportive throughout our experience. It's crucial for potential guests to understand that this isn't a tranquil Cove snorkel; it involves swimming in the open ocean to access the caves. The conditions can vary greatly – in our situation, it felt akin to a mini triathlon with challenging currents, water temperatures ranging from cold to mild, and no scheduled breaks, particularly as the afternoon wind increased the chop and reduced visibility. Therefore, it’s advisable to have strong swimming skills, and considering a wetsuit or flotation device can enhance comfort and safety. Providing clearer expectations upfront could help guests better prepare and determine if this activity suits their needs.
I had an incredible experience with Jayne, who was very knowledgeable and ensured I thoroughly enjoyed my time. She even assisted me with a muscle cramp, for which I'm grateful. The tour occurred in late September with excellent visibility. Wearing a 7 mm wetsuit, I felt comfortable in the 67 F water, allowing me to enjoy it for hours. We spotted a charming horn shark, numerous Garibaldis, a sheephead, and many other fish. While we explored several caves, the highlight was definitely the sea lions. It was wonderful to watch them swim, although the adults kept their distance; do expect a curious pup to come close to investigate. Overall, I had a fantastic time and will certainly return. Thank you, Jayne!
I had an enjoyable experience with La Jolla Snorkeling Outpost. The staff were friendly, the equipment was reliable, and they streamlined the whole process. The snorkeling was incredible, with clear waters and plenty of fish. Highly recommend it.
The guide was fantastic, and it was an excellent experience overall. We swam quite a distance to reach the cave. I plan to bring my own snorkeling gear next time, as the mask didn't fit well.
