Two-hour kayak rental for two—explore La Jolla's coastline at your pace from the closest operator to the beach.
Rent a tandem kayak for two hours to explore the picturesque coastline of La Jolla. As the closest kayak operator to the beach, SDBK offers convenient access to the water. While cave entry is not allowed on rentals, this option provides a relaxed way to paddle along the shores and enjoy the marine environment.
Note that safety is the top priority, and guests are advised to check conditions before heading out, as some areas may be restricted based on ocean conditions. Be sure to wear appropriate water attire and sun protection.

The kayak rental was an ideal choice for our family. The staff was welcoming and eager to share recommendations for places to explore. Kayaking in the San Diego area is definitely an experience not to be missed.
Our previous kayak tour of the La Jolla sea caves last summer was such a great experience that we returned this summer for another adventure. The reservation and rental went smoothly, and upon arrival, the welcoming staff quickly prepared us for our outing. We appreciated having someone to assist us on the beach, pulling our kayaks into the water and helping us navigate the waves to reach calmer waters. We had an amazing few hours on the water; it was a gorgeous day.
The kayak rental experience was decent, and we had an enjoyable time, but it didn't exceed our expectations. We obtained our rental through a gocity pass, which we thought included the cave tour, but it only covered the rental; access to the caves required an additional fee. Moreover, the kayaking area was somewhat restricted, surrounded by surfing, swimming, and snorkeling spots, with certain caves off-limits without a guide. Despite these limitations, we had a good time, although it wasn't exactly what we had hoped for.
Renting the kayak was an easy and fast process. The instructors were knowledgeable and provided helpful information. They offered guidance from the store to the beach and explained where we could explore and how to kayak. As a first-time kayaker, I would definitely choose to rent from them again.
I was extremely disappointed with the customer service. Despite inquiring about parking when reserving kayaks for our family of four, I was informed that no designated parking was available and was told to find street parking. We arrived early but spent half an hour searching for a spot without success. In the end, only three of us went kayaking, while the fourth family member had to drop us off and park far away. Bike and Kayak Tours refused to refund the charge for the fourth person, showing no concern for our situation. Be cautious, as parking might not be accessible, yet you will still be billed for services you cannot use.
I cannot recommend this company. After renting a locker, the attendant told us she would take care of the token, yet our locker was left open the whole time. We were instructed to look for someone in a red shirt to get the kayak, but no one was wearing one, and we had to ask another company for directions. Even with our life jackets on, we found a staff member under an umbrella, shirtless and distracted by his phone, without any signage. When we returned the kayak and paddles, we were ignored completely. The team in blue shirts was much friendlier and more helpful, and they hadn't even taken our money.
Our guides were fantastic and laid-back, especially Cora and a guy from Florida. The atmosphere was welcoming and informative. The pleasant weather allowed for visits to several caves, and Cora even took photos of my friend and me. This activity had been on my San Diego bucket list for years, and they truly delivered.
Sammy was an incredible tour guide. We definitely plan to book her again on our next visit. She made the experience fun with her entertaining stories and jokes.
I was eager to enjoy this kayaking adventure and explore the caves in La Jolla. I initially considered a guided tour but opted for a kayak rental, which seemed similar to the tour but without a guide. I prefer to explore independently and avoid large groups. When I arrived, I saw signs indicating that only guided groups could enter the caves. When I inquired, the staff confirmed this was the regulation, which felt misleading since the rental promised cave exploration. I was told I could view the caves from outside, and due to choppy waters, no one was going inside that day. I would have chosen a guided tour if I had known earlier, but everything was booked by then. At the beach, there was only one staff member available to help with kayak setup. He mentioned he was busy with a tour but offered to assist if we hurried. He was quite helpful, and we appreciated his kindness. Once out on the water, we had a wonderful time enjoying the quiet ocean and the kayak. We saw numerous guided groups excavating the caves, and when I asked a guide from another company about entering the caves, I learned that renters are never allowed inside without a guide—information that should be clearly stated in the rental advertising. There was one cave that guided kayakers could access, which we would have loved to explore if the information had been properly relayed. Despite the disappointment and misleading information, we still had a good experience overall.
We arrived on time for kayaking and waited for a while, but the shop was locked and no one was present. After attempting to contact someone without success, we learned from another company that they hadn't shown up the previous day either. It's unacceptable to leave paying customers stranded, especially those visiting from out of town. Fortunately, we found another company and had a great experience with them.
