An incredible journey that was expertly planned by David. Everything was transparent and detailed. The castle and the caves were truly remarkable.
The tour begins at Predjama Castle, which was a unique experience for me. The way the castle is integrated into the rock face was incredible, and exploring the various rooms was fascinating. Next, we headed to Postojna Cave. It's a chilly 10 degrees Celsius year-round, so a jacket is essential. As a first-time visitor to a cave system, I was awed by the stunning rock formations inside. It's worth noting that the caves are entirely accessible via ramps, while the castle had numerous stairs.
Describing the Postojna Caves in Slovenia, located just a few miles from Gorizia, is quite challenging. They are absolutely spectacular. The organization is excellent, and Italian-speaking guides lead the groups. Visitors enter via a train that navigates tight corners before revealing stunning views, all within a constant temperature of 10 degrees. The stalactites and massive stalagmites here are billions of years old, attracting over 40 million visitors globally. I won’t spoil the surprise of the experience, but the facilities are very clean and modern, with great services. However, Italians might find the espresso coffee disappointing.
The bus didn't arrive, and we couldn't get in touch with the tour operator. Now, we are attempting to secure a refund, but the company's response has been very unsatisfactory.
The title suggested a private tour, but that wasn't the case. After returning, I noticed the description mentioned a limit of 7 participants, yet there were 8 on our trip. We also didn't receive the bottled water. On the positive side, communication regarding pick-up was effective, and our guide was friendly.
The excursion was excellent, featuring visits to a castle and caves. Our driver, David, was great. We started at the castle to beat the crowds, followed by a 45-minute lunch before entering the caves at 11:45. The initial 20 minutes were traveled by train, and we spent 1.5 hours walking through the caves without any stairs. There was a large group with an English-speaking guide, so it's best to stay a bit ahead. We returned by train for another 20 minutes and were back at the Hotel Savoia Excelsior in Trieste by 14:30 as planned.
It's important for travelers to be aware that this activity is of a moderate level. Participants should be capable of climbing steep stairs and walking considerable distances.
I had a fantastic half-day excursion to the renowned castle perched on a cliff and the cave. David was excellent and made the experience truly unforgettable. I'm grateful and would enthusiastically consider another tour to explore other locations in Slovenia next time.
We experienced this tour during a cruise stop in Trieste, Italy, and it was a fantastic way to glimpse Slovenia. The cave was impressive, the largest I've encountered, far surpassing Carlsbad Caverns and others. The medieval castle was truly unique, built into a cave, making it a must-see.
The cave is definitely a must-see. A short train ride of about 10 minutes takes you in, and I was captivated by its stunning beauty. Inside, we did quite a bit of walking; while the paths are paved, some parts are steep. There's even a post office within the cave where you can send postcards from underground. Afterwards, we explored the palace located inside, which was quite unique and fascinating. Our guide, Ernie, was excellent—very patient and shared a wealth of historical knowledge about his country.
