Full-day tour from Koper — visit Postojna Cave via electric train, plus a photo stop at Predjama Castle.
This group tour departs from Koper for a day exploring two notable sites in Slovenia. The highlight is a visit to Postojna Cave, where you'll ride an electric train through captivating underground passages and see unique formations. Expect to meet the cave’s famous inhabitant, the olm, during the guided tour.
On the return journey, there’s a photo stop at Predjama Castle, celebrated as the world’s largest cave castle set against a dramatic cliff backdrop. The tour is led by an English-speaking local guide who shares insights into Slovenia’s culture and history. Plan for comfortable transport throughout the day.
Reviews
We did not have the experience that other reviews suggested. Instead of entering the castle, we only had a brief 10-minute stop to take photos. I recommend spending a little extra for the tour that guarantees castle access. Additionally, this was not a small group tour; we were placed on a large bus with 50 other passengers. We could have booked the same tour through the cruise line for $30 less per person.
This activity was remarkable. We arranged this excursion independently from our cruise on the Norwegian Gem. Istranka Tours provided excellent communication regarding meeting points and times. A bus picked us up at the port and took us to the cave, which was incredible—there's even a post office inside! Sending a postcard was fun. We've visited many caves, but this one stands out. Our bus tour guide was very knowledgeable, and it made us eager to return to Slovenia for a longer stay. We also saw Predjama Castle, which was stunning! Though we didn't enter, we enjoyed a tasty Union beer at a nearby restaurant.
Our guide Neva was fantastic. She was kind and attentive, ensuring we departed and arrived on schedule. Her knowledge about the history of Koper and Postojna made the trip engaging. Neva also ensured we had jackets for warmth in the cave and kindly took our picture at the castle. It was truly an excellent experience that comes highly recommended.
The cave is truly remarkable, making our visit an unforgettable experience. The castle and its rich history were also fantastic. We explored these sites with family and friends, creating lasting memories. The highlight was when our guide took us to a quaint village for lunch at a family-run restaurant that served exceptional food.
We had an amazing day on this small group tour guided by Mea. The caves are beautiful, and the castle is charming. Since the caves are quite cool at 10 degrees Celsius, remember to take an extra layer. Mea's spontaneous polka performance and her suggestion for a traditional Slovenian cake were delightful highlights.
Marina, our guide, was incredibly friendly and well-informed, sharing plenty of insights about the locations we explored and the country itself. The caves were uniquely stunning, and the brief photo opportunity at the castle was a nice bonus. I would strongly recommend this tour to cruise ship travelers, as they accommodate the timing to fit the ship's schedule.
Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The caves were stunning, and the train ride was enjoyable. This was a wonderful way to explore this beautiful country.
Mateja, our guide, was very informative, and the convenience of going directly from the port to the cave was invaluable. The communication was excellent, along with insider tips that enhanced our cave experience.
The cave was incredibly beautiful, and the tour was quite engaging. Our guide was excellent, showing a genuine passion for his country.
Yuri served as an excellent guide, providing a rich array of information about the regions we passed while traveling to the caves, making the ride enjoyable. I found the cave tour itself to be quite physically demanding, with its inclines and declines; I had mistakenly assumed most of the experience would be on the train. However, I am genuinely pleased that we participated, as it was both stunning and fascinating.
