A full-day biking experience along the historic Parenzana trail in Slovene Istria, surrounded by stunning natural landscapes.
This full-day biking tour follows the Parenzana Trail, a former narrow gauge railway route that weaves through the picturesque landscapes of Slovene Istria. Starting from Koper, cyclists will traverse through unspoiled nature, with plenty of opportunities to soak in the scenic beauty along the way.
Participants should be prepared for a day of outdoor activity, so comfortable clothing and a good pair of cycling shoes are advisable. The trail provides a refreshing escape into nature, offering a perfect blend of physical activity and the chance to recharge amidst stunning vistas.
Reviews
The bike tour had a promising description, but it was disappointing in execution. We spent 45 minutes organizing bikes and received no communication from the tour company despite multiple messages. I only got a brief email about pickup details the day before, leaving my questions unanswered. While the ride itself was enjoyable and the scenery lovely, the old train line was simply part of a paved road, which was not as expected. We rode to Izola with a few stops for information, but we missed the promised tunnels, olive orchards, and vineyards. When we arrived in Izola, there was no guidance about our activities, and it took my prompting to get 30 minutes of free time to explore after waiting too long for coffee. While Izola is a charming seaside town, we learned little about its history and culture. Finally, we returned to sample cheeses and wine, which was nice but not the village lunch advertised. Overall, the tour was overpriced and didn't match the expectations set in the description. We could have rented bikes and had a similar experience without a guide. I wouldn’t recommend it.
My husband and I docked with a cruise ship, and a representative was waiting for us right after passport control. Our guide took us to the office and shared insights about the town’s history. After ensuring everyone in our group of 10 had their tires pumped and seats adjusted, we set off. We cycled a short distance through the Old Town streets before hitting the bike path, a well-marked route on a former railway bed designed for walkers and cyclists. Our guide provided information and took photos at intervals. As we neared Isola, Nikola, our guide, stopped at a church and bell tower, calling the caretaker to let us explore, which was a delightful surprise not mentioned in the itinerary. In Isola, we enjoyed some beer and coffee at a cafe while having pleasant conversations. Afterward, we could either head into the hills for an extra hour of cycling or return to the shop. Back at the shop, we savored tastings of olives, meats, cheese, several flavored olive oils, and different wines. We highly recommend this tour. Notes: - There are restrooms at the bike shop, cafe, and along the path. - Beer and coffee are additional but reasonably priced and enjoyable. - Bring a water bottle; bikes have holders for them. - Our guide provided a map and directions to places we wanted to visit post-tour. - Standard bikes and e-bikes are available.
The arrangements were pleasant, and the activity was fantastic. Our guide, Barbara, was excellent, and everything was well-organized, providing a lovely way to experience the countryside.
This was likely the highlight of our Mediterranean cruise excursions. The trails offered stunning views, and riding through the tunnels was a unique experience. Our guide, Dajean, the company owner, was exceptional. Although there were some hills, our wives, aged 59 and 64, managed easily on the two electric bikes. I highly recommend this trip.
We share the same sentiment! We enjoyed the same ride as Harrison, appreciating the beautiful scenery, tunnels, tapas, and wine, along with the historical insights from our guide, who is also the owner. While some hills were challenging, you can move at your own speed. This tour was a great way to get some exercise after indulging in all that cruise food. We highly recommend it!
Dejan from Koper Trips greeted us at the cruise terminal, and we took a short walk to his shop while he shared insights about Koper's history and nearby buildings. At the shop, we had a choice of great bikes and set off along well-maintained bike paths on a lovely warm day filled with fascinating facts. The ride was easy and mostly flat, with the bikes allowing us to handle small inclines effortlessly. We passed vineyards, salt fields, and the waterfront before heading into the countryside. After a couple of hours, we returned to the shop for a delightful tasting of cheeses, hams, olive oils, and wines. I highly recommend Koper Trips.
The bike journey from Koper to Izola was perfectly timed at four hours. Participants could choose their distance and route according to their fitness levels and the day's heat. A refreshing cold beer was enjoyed in Izola halfway through, and the wine and 'meze' in Koper were quite pleasant. I'm considering taking this tour again in the future with family or friends. Additionally, e-bikes were offered, which made the climb to the tunnel easier.
Dan, our guide, was friendly and knowledgeable with great stories, but the bike tour fell short of our expectations. We didn't do any of the advertised activities, such as visiting the two tunnels. The food and wine tasting was essentially a pit stop at a store where we each had half a cookie, some jam, and a small shot of a spirit. For $95 per person, it wasn’t worth it, especially considering we had a five-hour ATV excursion with a full lunch for the same price elsewhere.
This trail is not ideal for older riders. While an e-bike can make it easier, the rocky terrain presents challenges. The scenery is nice, but it remains quite similar along the route.
This tour offers a fantastic way to enjoy a day in Koper. The guides are excellent, and there are plenty of breaks to relax and stay hydrated. Their knowledge of the region added to the experience, and the scenery was stunning.
