The visit to the elephant sanctuary was quite fascinating. We participated in a 1.5-hour experience that included hotel pick-up, feeding several elephants, and walking among the river trees with one of them. There was no touching, bathing, or riding, which aligned perfectly with our expectations. Mae, Tony, and the gentleman who welcomed us demonstrated extensive knowledge and a genuine care for the elephants.

We fed the elephants the snacks we had prepared and followed them to the river. It was evident that the elephants were well looked after. An amazing experience. This true sanctuary focuses on the well-being of the elephants rather than profit. There is no touching or hugging allowed, allowing the elephants to roam freely, which they sometimes do when they catch a whiff of ripe fruit from nearby plantations. The only drawback is that we wished we could have stayed longer.
We were initially hesitant about elephant excursions, wanting only to support an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary that prioritizes the well-being of these amazing animals. The Khao Lak Elephant Sanctuary is an ethical option I highly recommend. We had close encounters with five wonderful female elephants, each with a poignant backstory before finding refuge here. Each elephant is cared for by dedicated staff trained to meet their needs, receiving a nutritious diet, regular walks, and freedom to roam. All five elephants appeared healthy, happy, and confident in their new surroundings. We learned about their care and enjoyed a brief walk with one of them as part of our small group tour. It's crucial to avoid sanctuaries that promote activities like bathing, as they can be quite stressful for the elephants, and thankfully, such practices are not allowed here. We had plenty of chances to take photos, both on our own and with the help of our friendly guide.
The experience felt like a rip-off. A large portion of the hour was spent standing without much to do. For the price, I expected more. If it was just a donation to support five rescued elephants, that should have been communicated. The only real interaction was feeding them a few small bananas from a distance behind a fence, although it was enjoyable when one elephant was brought down to bathe. The staff were fine, and there were no crowds.

This sanctuary operates with a strong ethical focus, which I truly valued. Our guide was knowledgeable and addressed all our inquiries. We learned about the history of the elephants there and even had the chance to feed them and walk beside one of the older elephants.
