This trip was truly exceptional. Jason provided clear instructions for our morning meeting and suggested an ideal departure time to catch the salmon run with the incoming tide. The scenery along the river was breathtaking, and numerous bald eagles kept us company while we fished. We easily reached our limit on sockeyes and even landed a king from the shore, as Alaskan regulations prevented boat fishing for kings that day. Jason's ability to read the river and direct us to prime spots was impressive. If we have the chance to return, we will definitely rebook with King of the River.
Dean and his deckhand Wade were fantastic. My dad, father-in-law, and I spent a full day fishing for reds on the Kenai with Dean. While we didn't limit out, we definitely had our chances. Dean got us on the fish right away, and Wade was always there to help. The King of the River crew showed up on time and was serious about getting started at 4:00 am, which we really appreciated as avid anglers. Dean and Wade worked hard to ensure we had plenty of space while fishing and kept that up throughout the day. We had a wonderful experience, and I wouldn’t want to fish with anyone else. I'm looking forward to returning in June for a king salmon trip with these guys. Cheers and tight lines!
I highly recommend this company. My two friends and I, all long-time Alaska residents, enjoyed a half-day Silver Salmon trip on the Kasilof. It was an excellent experience, enhanced by surprisingly dry and warm weather despite the summer being notably wet. Our guide, Aaron, was exceptional; he was knowledgeable about fish species, the river, and fishing techniques. His humor, engagement, patience, and enthusiasm made the day even better. It’s clear he loves his work. The entire staff did a fantastic job keeping us informed on every detail, and now we’re reaping the rewards of our efforts. We look forward to returning next Silver season and will definitely request Aaron again. Diane & Friends
I had an excellent day on the river. I made a last-minute reservation and KOTR managed to fit me into a Kenai trip with just 12 hours' notice. Dean was an outstanding guide, and we started catching fish within 30 minutes of being on the river. Everyone in the boat caught Coho. When the fishing slowed, we moved to another location and, again in about half an hour, we all hooked up once more. It was a fantastic way to wrap up my holiday in Kenai. A big thank you to Dean and the crew. I will definitely book again when I return.
We arranged a full-day fishing trip on the Kenai River. The team at King of the River, especially Christy, was very accommodating. She contacted us the day before to inform us that the fishing on the Kenai was slow and recommended we switch to Kasilof, which turned out to be the perfect choice. Our guide Jason was excellent, and we spent the entire day having fun and catching fish. They handled the cleaning and shipping of the fish back home seamlessly. Overall, we had an amazing experience with a fantastic crew, and I strongly suggest fishing with King of the River.
I would advise seeking another guide service if you're aiming to catch King Salmon on the Kasilof. We booked with King of the River for three consecutive years, but they continually informed us that targeting king salmon was not possible. One year, the season ended early due to closures, and this year the decision rested with the guide, yet our trip focused solely on coho salmon. Our guide, Aaron, helped us catch our limit of coho in about two hours, but I had paid a premium price expecting to fish for kings. On the day of the charter, my wife fell ill, and they refused to provide any credit or refund despite the circumstances. Ultimately, we paid $475 for one person to fish for reds, which typically costs around $150 to $175 for a guide on the Kenai. While understanding that predicting the king run can be difficult, certain aspects of customer service are manageable. KOTR could have adjusted their fees or at least informed us that our dates might not be ideal for king fishing and suggested a coho-only trip instead. This would have allowed for a better customer experience without feeling misled. I anticipated a higher standard from this outfitter, and they did not meet my expectations. More transparency is needed.
I had an incredible fishing experience in mid-August on the Kenai River with Quinton. We limited out in just around four hours, despite losing about 25 fish between the three of us. The weather was pleasant, the river conditions were excellent, and the sockeye were plentiful. Quinton put in a lot of effort, moving along the river to assist us in catching fish. It truly was a fantastic day. The name King of the River is indeed fitting. I will definitely return.
This experience was a dream come true and exceeded my expectations. I had a fantastic day on the Kasilof River on June 13, 2025. As a solo traveler, I appreciated how warmly I was welcomed, especially since many companies avoid booking singles. I was fortunate that another solo also joined, allowing for a full day on the water. My guide, Chris, was exceptional—friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable, which made the trip even better despite my accidentally tangling the gear. The sockeye fishing was remarkable. My sole aim was to catch just one salmon, and I ended up with my limit of great-sized fish. As someone who typically fishes for largemouth bass, I was taken aback by the power of the salmon. After landing my first one, everything felt like a bonus. I should mention that the King Salmon fishing was not fruitful, but Chris worked hard to find one for us. It just wasn’t our day for Kings, as we saw only a few after much effort. However, having a boat filled with sockeye, stunning views, and great company made the lack of Kings a minor issue. Honestly, I could have spent the whole day fishing for sockeyes and been completely satisfied. Two quick tips: first, bring an extra pair of socks. One of my boatmates fell into the river after a fish hit hard, and having spare socks made a huge difference in his comfort. He still managed to land the fish while soaked, which was impressive. Second, be aware that the de-boating, cleanup, and shuttle back takes about two hours. I was unprepared for that and it led to some stress about a family commitment later that evening. We finished fishing around 2 but didn’t leave until after 4. On the bright side, the wildlife, including a dozen bald eagles, kept us entertained. These operators really excel at what they do, and I highly recommend them, especially requesting Chris. I am grateful to the team at King of the River for an unforgettable experience.
We enjoyed three days of fishing with outstanding guides. Thanks to Chris, Carson, and Bobbie for their help. Chris even taught my wife how to use a spinning reel since she was accustomed to a cane pole. Cristy, the office manager, was incredibly helpful, making our fishing experience enjoyable. We caught plenty of fish.
Our time with Bobby was fantastic. He was incredibly kind and knowledgeable, patiently answering all our questions. This trip became the highlight of our vacation. Although I initially booked it for my husband, I found myself thoroughly enjoying every moment. We were excited about our catch and loved observing the wildlife and chatting with Bobby. We're already planning to return next summer and wouldn’t want to go with anyone else.
