Three and a half to four hours on Mendenhall Lake by canoe, guided 30-minute transfer from cruise docks, focused on glacier views and wildlife encounters.
This canoeing tour lasts three and a half to four hours, beginning with a guided 30-minute transfer from the cruise ship docks to the West Glacier boat launch in the Tongass National Forest. After receiving waterproof gear and a brief paddling lesson, you'll launch into Mendenhall Lake for a guided exploration of the area.
As you navigate the lake, the guide will lead you to the best viewpoints of the Mendenhall Glacier’s blue crevasses and seracs while keeping an eye out for local wildlife including Arctic terns and mountain goats. The intimate setting allows for a quiet experience away from the crowds. Please note that this tour focuses solely on canoeing and does not include any hiking.

This glacier canoe excursion captured the essence of Alaska: wild, beautiful, and undeniably memorable. Luke expertly guided our group with a wonderful mix of humor, wisdom, and reassuring confidence. Each paddle revealed a fresh view: pristine waters, impressive ice, and the unique sensation of being in a place few ever visit. Luke's engaging stories and deep appreciation for his surroundings made the journey feel effortless, and his insider knowledge brought the glacier to life. A special mention to his mother, Tess, who clearly instilled in him his warmth and captivating storytelling ability. The equipment was excellent, and Luke's organization and positivity enhanced the experience, which exceeded all our expectations. If you're considering it, just go ahead and book. This adventure will provide you with lasting memories of Alaska.
This experience was absolutely incredible. I’m really pleased I opted for this instead of the helicopter tour. I was concerned about the canoeing aspect, but it turned out to be quite manageable. The views were stunning, and the tour guides, Luke and Mason, were fantastic — knowledgeable and engaging. I highly recommend this without any hesitation. Go ahead and book it!
The tour was fantastic, and our guide was engaging and well-informed. We received plenty of helpful information throughout the experience. I suggest bringing canoe seat cushions and taking a break halfway for some stretching and a light snack.
Hanna, Tor, and Stacey were truly wonderful. They were informative and brought a lot of humor to the experience. Their jokes added extra enjoyment to the tour.
I had a fantastic time with Brady and the tour team. They were both accommodating and engaging. I did miss the introduction, but it's worth noting that this tour doesn't include access to the glacier.
Our experience was fantastic! The price was just right, and the duration, including the hike and canoe trip, was incredible. Our guides were very mindful of our safety in the natural environment and provided us with an unforgettable adventure.
I had a wonderful experience on this tour. Canoeing was challenging, but being close to Mendenhall Glacier was amazing. Our guide, Hannah, was excellent, though her unusual sense of humor left some in the canoe puzzled, perhaps to distract from our sore muscles. My friend and I both enjoyed it, but I rated it four stars because we were given a dry bag with snacks and water but had no opportunity to eat or drink. It was surprising that we didn’t stop to stretch our legs and hydrate during almost two hours of paddling, which left us exhausted on the way back. If we weren't going to disembark, I felt the canoe could have used some cushioning since many of us were uncomfortable afterward. I noticed a spot on the left shore near the glacier where kayaks were docked. Hannah’s jokes did lighten the mood, but overall, it was a memorable experience and worth the cost. One last thing: a guy named Elmer took a group photo and mentioned we’d receive a copy, but we never did.
Eligha guided our group to the Mendenhall Glacier, and we returned safely. It was a fantastic experience filled with valuable information. I highly recommend it.
Hannah was an incredibly kind guide. Her humor added to the fun of the rowing experience. I highly recommend this tour.
This experience was incredibly enjoyable, and our guide Hannah was fantastic. She provided a wealth of information about the region and kept us entertained with her endless jokes. Getting so close to the glacier was a highlight, and I would certainly do this again.
