• This is a half-day activity exploring Al Balad, which translates to “the town,” referring to the historical core of Jeddah. Al-Balad was established in the 7th century and has historically been the center of Jeddah. The defensive walls of Al-Balad were demolished in the 1940s. During the 1970s and 1980s, as Jeddah experienced economic growth from the oil boom, many residents relocated north, leaving Al-Balad behind. Al Balad is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and efforts have been made to preserve its old structures along with their distinctive window designs and doors. These historical buildings, some constructed using seashells and stones, once accommodated prominent Jeddah families and hosted the late King Abdulaziz upon his arrival in the city. The tour will cover the history of these buildings, including an interior visit to one of them to observe the decor, furniture, and lifestyle of that era. • The old mosques in the area, some established over 300 years ago, are also significant attractions and remain operational today. The primary highlight is the local food in Al Balad, where the tour will pass by well-known vendors serving regional snacks, such as the bread-based drink “Sobia” and a bakery recognized for its fresh bread. Another local snack includes “Balilah,” consisting of beans and pickles. Participants will take a break at an open-air café to sample the renowned local tea, which is combined with milk and herbs. The itinerary includes a visit to the center of Al Balad to see the first hotel built in Jeddah, which showcases Italian architectural influence, followed by a stop at the first school established in Saudi Arabia. The tour will conclude with a visit to an art house and museum featuring a collection of local art and antiques.
