Two hours by special highlands bus — visit the Bolafjall viewing platform with panoramic views over Ísafjarðadjúp and Jökulfirðir, available from mid-June to mid-September.
This two-hour tour takes you from Ísafjörður to the Bolafjall Mountain viewing platform, located at about 636 metres high. Accessible only by special highlands bus during summer months from mid-June to mid-September, the road is steep and gravel. Expect spectacular views over Ísafjarðadjúp, Jökulfirðir, and, on clear days, even Greenland.
The journey begins with a drive up the road towards the radar station, originally built by the Americans and now operated by the Icelandic coast guard. Sunset views from the platform are particularly stunning, so plan your time accordingly.
Reviews
I booked this for two people for $102.17 using a discount code. The company was responsive and informative prior to our visit. Upon arriving at the port on our cruise, we saw several buses, but many didn’t have signs. After asking around, we located our comfortable mini-bus. Our driver and guide was friendly and knowledgeable, bringing his young son along who quietly enjoyed the ride. The journey to Bolafjall showcased beautiful scenery and offered a perspective of the area that would be missed by just exploring Isafjordur. The drive up steep roads might be challenging for those afraid of heights, particularly the 10-minute ascent on a dirt road without guardrails. Once at the top, we had about 30 minutes to take in the stunning views and snap some photos, although there isn’t much to see up there. Our guide also took us on some alternative routes back and included a brief stop to overlook an old fishing village, which was an unadvertised bonus. We returned to the ship after around 2 hours and 10 minutes, exactly on schedule. Overall, we were very pleased with this tour as a quick overview of the area.
Thank you for the fantastic tour! Everything was amazing, and the weather was perfect too. Ísafjörður is truly a stunning location.
Despite the thick fog that obstructed our views, our driver ensured we experienced unique locations. The tour was very engaging and informative, and everyone had a great time.
It was an excellent trip, and our tour guide was very well-informed. The bus ride was quite nerve-wracking, but the driver is very experienced, so there’s no need to be concerned. The platform and the area around it are fantastic for exploration.
The scenery around the community was stunning, even with bad weather at the platform. Our guide, an Icelander, was dedicated to making the experience unforgettable and provided a wealth of information throughout the tour. He communicated effectively and answered our questions. I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Iceland.
The tour was decent and uncomplicated. Lasting only two hours, we went straight to the viewing platform where we had a short time to appreciate the scenery and capture some nice photos. There was not much to do except enjoy the surroundings and watch a video. The itinerary also included a brief visit to an old fishing village. The guide was knowledgeable and shared insightful comments.
The tour was outstanding, offering valuable insights into both history and geography. The viewpoints exceeded our expectations. Our Polish English guide was impressive as well. The fishing town we visited was charming.
