It took me over a year to find the contact information for this tour adventure after seeing a report on TVN. The videos and images online don't do justice to the magical experience of descending through a beautiful desert at sunset—a memory that will stay with us. I shared this descent with my youngest daughter, who is 23, and I look forward to experiencing it again with my grandchildren, who are currently 6 and 4. Our guide, Billy, was exceptional, providing clear instructions for a safe and enjoyable journey.
Our experience with Mistico was exceptional and included fat biking, camping, visits to Pica, Aymara culture immersion, birdwatching, and cycling across the Altiplano. Billy and his team were remarkable, exceeding our expectations by accommodating our needs, including traveling with our dog and catering to a vegan diet. This adventure became a highlight of our South American journey, as it felt authentic, unique, and away from the typical tourist routes. I strongly recommend Mistico for anyone seeking adventure tours. Instead of spending time and money in San Pedro de Atacama with all the crowds, embrace the wilderness through a focus on environmental and sustainable tourism.
We spent six incredible days with Mistico exploring the Atacama highlands and desert alongside our two boys, aged 8 and 10. Our adventure included engaging with an Aymara family to learn about llama and alpaca herding, swimming in stunning geothermal pools, sandboarding, and fat biking. The entire experience was remarkable for us. Billy, our guide who is a biologist, provided education about the local ecosystem that was accessible and interesting for our children. He also adapted activities based on their feedback, making it enjoyable for everyone. The people Billy introduced us to were warm and welcoming, enhancing our family experience. I highly recommend Mistico for families, but it's important to note that the Adobe hut accommodations, while charming, are not luxurious. The food is typical for locals, which may challenge picky eaters, and be prepared for hikes at high elevations of 13,000 feet and above; however, Billy is great at adjusting plans as needed. Mistico offers specific day trips focused on hiking, sandboarding, and biking, and they have bikes suited for kids if a six-day trek seems excessive. Traveling to Atacama requires some effort, but with Mistico and Billy, you can expect a safe, well-organized, and delightful adventure. We are already considering a trip to Peru with Billy for our next journey.
We spent several days with Billy and Joanna from Mistico exploring the lesser-known parts of the Atacama. Our adventure began at Alto de Pica, where we enjoyed an exhilarating evening fat biking session through the sand dunes, followed by a night camping under the stars. The next morning, we repeated the ride in daylight, gaining confidence as we navigated over the dunes. We then refreshed ourselves in Pica with two glasses of freshly squeezed mango juice, possibly the best drink I've ever had. A few days later, Billy packed our touring bikes and gear, and we traveled a few hours toward the Bolivian border. We made several stops for acclimatization walks, during which Billy shared insights about the region’s flora and fauna. Over the next two days, we hiked through a cactus forest and visited a thermal pool, a welcome relief after cycling at high altitude, and journeyed from one Aymara village to another. We were welcomed into the homes of two Aymara families who not only accommodated our dog but also catered to our vegan diet. The food was fantastic, and we even learned the traditional way of preparing quinoa. Our time with Mistico Outdoors revealed a Chile that we might have missed otherwise. Billy and Joanna shared a wealth of cultural and biological knowledge, making for an unforgettable adventure in the Atacama altiplano.
We enjoyed a fat biking tour with Billy and Joanna yesterday, and it was truly impressive. Riding down the sand dunes in the Atacama desert during sunset created a stunning atmosphere. They organized the trip excellently, picking us up promptly from our apartment in Iquique. Throughout our journey to and from the desert, we learned a great deal about Chile’s nature, history, society, and politics, far beyond what we would have as typical tourists. This will be a memorable experience for us. Thank you for your warm hospitality and introduction to Chile.
We are a family of four from Viña Del Mar, Chile, and we spent Christmas week in Iquique. This activity was the primary reason for our trip, and it turned out to be one of the best outdoor experiences we've ever had. It's suitable for the entire family; if you can ride a bike, you're good to go. Our guide, Billy, was outstanding, and we appreciated his company and conversations. There's no need to worry about capturing photos since Billy handles that. Downhill mountain biking would also be a great option for friends or colleagues; I'm considering it for a team-building event at work. I was surprised to learn that few Chileans take part in such tours, so don't overlook this opportunity. In short, it was incredible, and you shouldn't miss it.
We had an outstanding experience. As two couples in our 50s, we found the physical activity to be manageable. Cycling through the desert and navigating the dunes was more enjoyable than we anticipated—it felt both entertaining and safe. The bikes were comfortable and in good condition. It was a privilege to have Billy and Yuri as our guides; their attentiveness and willingness to address our questions were greatly appreciated. We were picked up from our hotel at 15:00 and returned around 22:00, with a stop at Pica and La Tirana on our way back. It was a fantastic afternoon; this tour was the highlight of our trip, and we left very satisfied.
The fat tire bike, originally designed for snow in Alaska, is also perfect for riding on sand. If you're new to mountain biking, this might take some practice. The bike operates with a counter-pedal brake, which helps avoid accidents on the dunes. It's primarily a tour for foreigners, as locals often overlook such experiences. I ended up with sand in my ears, but witnessing the desert sunset was priceless. This experience rekindled my love for biking and brought back memories of my childhood adventures.
