The staff at Coldwater Alaska, including those in the office and the water taxi service, are both friendly and professional. The water taxis that my wife and I used appeared new and were well-maintained. Some might consider the beginning of the Saddle trailhead hike to Grewingk Glacier a bit steep, but the path eventually levels out, leading to breathtaking views of the lake and glacier that shouldn't be missed. If you are in the Homer area, this is an essential experience.
The hike was fantastic, and the experience traveling to the hiking spot with Coldwater was equally enjoyable. I highly recommend this service and found the hike to be beautiful.
We enjoyed the hike on a lovely day, but the experience had its drawbacks. After being dropped off by the water taxi, we received only minimal instructions. Although there were bear warning signs at the start, we weren't advised to carry bear spray. The scenery was stunning, and the hike was generally easy, though the final 1.5 miles were moderately challenging. After completing the hike, we had to wait for 90 minutes for our pickup.
This experience is not a guided hike as advertised. It consists solely of a boat ride to the trailhead, leaving you to navigate on your own in bear territory without a guide or a map. While the area is beautiful and the trail is well marked, we were disappointed that it was not communicated that this would be a self-guided journey. After this experience, we’re unlikely to use Viator again.
The experience was misrepresented by the name "Grewingk Glacier Hike." I expected to walk on the glacier, but instead, I only reached a viewpoint. While the scenery was impressive, the trail was rough and covered in dirt and gravel, necessitating sturdy hiking boots. It was a challenging hike with steep, narrow paths that required careful navigation to avoid ankle injuries. Nonetheless, the sight of the iceberg floating on the lake was indeed spectacular.
Our family had a wonderful time on the boat trip to the bay for our hike. Zach was a fantastic captain, and the boat itself was excellent. They exceeded our expectations by providing trail maps, playing great music during the ride, and ensuring a timely pickup after our hike. I highly recommend this experience.
The short and challenging hike, nearly 4 miles long, led us to a stunning view of Grewingk Glacier with breathtaking scenery. Captain Ben was excellent, taking us to and from our drop-off point while showing us puffins and sea otters. We truly appreciated it, thank you, Captain Ben.
The hike to the glacier features a rocky path with many roots, and descending at the end proved to be difficult. It’s a self-guided experience, so it's better to arrange your own water taxi to save money, as we received no help from the company and had to seek assistance from others.
This hike is fantastic for those with limited time, and I suggest adding the side hike if you're able to manage 8 miles. The weather was ideal, and the water taxi was exceptionally helpful. Highly recommended for a quick visit to Homer.
We booked at the last minute and though they couldn't take just two people, they quickly connected us with another water taxi service (ABS). Both companies were excellent and dependable, with great local insights about other hikes.
