This half-day tour takes you through the less-travelled back roads of Kilauea volcano. You'll explore the fascinating lava caves and unique lava trees amidst a lush volcanic rainforest while viewing the remnants of the 2018 lava flow and a newly formed black sand beach.
For cruise ship guests, special permits allow for direct pickup from Hilo’s port, with departure times adjusted to your ship's schedule. Guests staying at Hilo hotels will meet at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking in natural terrain.

Lori, our driver and guide, was the highlight of this tour; her knowledge and humor were truly appreciated. Regarding the sites, I've seen black sand beaches before, wouldn't tackle the steep stairs to the lava tube, found Rainbow Falls underwhelming due to the cloudy weather, and while the lava trees were unique, I have encountered lava fields in the past.
I want to express my gratitude to Ellen and the tour operator for their patience as we were delayed for more than an hour and a half by customs, even though we disembarked early. The tour itself was fantastic; Ellen provided great insights and truly enhanced our experience. I highly recommend this excursion, particularly with Ellen as your guide.
