Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan to house the remains of his wife, Arjumand Banu Begum, known as Mumtaz Mahal, it reportedly cost over thirty-one million rupees and took twenty-two years to build, employing 20,000 laborers. Construction began in 1631, shortly after the queen's passing, and the mausoleum is set on a terrace with views of the Yamuna River. • The Agra Fort is a historical landmark in Agra, located to the south of the Agra Fort Station, two kilometers from the Taj Mahal along the right bank of the Yamuna River. The fort features many impressive buildings across its extensive circuit. Its architectural walls showcase battlements, embrasures, and machicolations, all contributing to its aesthetic appeal. The current structure reflects the contributions of three different rulers, beginning with Akbar, who designed it, followed by additions from Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Within the fort, you can explore the Jahangir Mahal, Khas Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, and Diwan-i-Aam. • A visit to Mehtab Bagh, located at the back of the Taj Mahal, offers a stunning view of the monument's reflection in the Yamuna River, providing an excellent opportunity for photography.
