• Situated in a ravine at the base of red sandstone hills, Badami is strikingly surrounded by Agastya Lake. The cave temples, carved from red sandstone, consist of a hall supported by numerous pillars and a square sanctum. The ceilings are adorned with paintings. Notable features include the pose of Lord Shiva with his consort Parvathi and a coiled serpent, as well as an 18-armed Lord Nataraja depicted in 81 dancing poses. Badami is also recognized for its inscriptions, particularly the first Sanskrit inscription in old Kannada script found on a hillock dating back to 543 CE. • Aihole is home to over a hundred stone temples dating from the 5th century onward. According to legend, it is where Lord Parashurama washed his axe after defeating all the Kshatriyas. • This UNESCO World Heritage Site exemplifies Visara-style architecture, with the most notable temple being the Virupaksha temple, constructed in the 8th century by Queen Lokamahadevi in 745 to celebrate her victory over the Pallavas of Kanchi.
