• The Gwalior Fort, an architectural wonder from the 8th century, is situated on a hilltop. Its defensive features include two main palaces, temples, and water tanks. Noteworthy structures include the Teli-Ka-Mandir, built in Dravidian style, known for its intricately designed exteriors, and the Man Singh Palace, constructed by King Man Singh in the 15th century. The palace showcases remarkable design with blue ceramic tiles on the façade, embodying the essence of the Tomar dynasty. Additionally, the Gwalior Fort complex includes the Gujari Mahal, erected by Raja Man Singh for his queen Mrignayani, as well as the Karan Palace, Jahangir Mahal, and Shahjahan Mahal. • Gujari Mahal, built in the 15th century by Raja Mansingh Tomar for his queen Mrignayani, serves as a testament to love. Tradition suggests that, after his eight queens failed to have an heir, he married a milkman’s daughter named Mrignayani. She requested a dedicated palace with a reliable water supply from the river Ria, resulting in the creation of Gujari Mahal. This location now features an archaeological museum housing a diverse collection of Hindu and Jain sculptures, artifacts from the 1st and 2nd century B.C., replicas of Bagh cave frescoes, and terracotta items. A notable miniature statue of Salbhanjika can be viewed upon request from the museum curator. NOTE: The Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum is not open on Mondays. • Teli Ka Mandir, part of the Gwalior Fort, dates back to the 9th century and stands as Gwalior's tallest structure at 100 feet. This impressive building features a distinct architectural style, with a roof shape reflective of Dravidian design and decorations resembling Indo-Aryan influences. The adornments are in the Nagara Style, a recognized art form from Northern India, showcasing figures of river deities, serpents, romantic couples, and Garuda, the celestial vehicle of Lord Vishnu.
