The beach was quite dirty, and the water was murky with seaweed, making it difficult to see. Finding decent public beaches was an adventure, though our hotel, which wasn’t directly on the beach, did offer a nice space for beach access. I wouldn’t return to Orange Beach just for the beach, though I understand conditions may vary. Additionally, at Gulf Shores, there were so many jellyfish that it was impossible to enjoy the water. It's hard to see how people choose Gulf Shores or Orange Beach for a vacation.
I strongly advise against purchasing this. It failed to work at any of the attractions, and none of the staff could scan or manage the tickets. I had to pay again at each location in Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan, wasting $188.
The Gulf Shore Zoo is small, which is why I gave it four stars. However, the battleship experience was fantastic. If you're a taller, larger person, I wouldn't suggest going into the submarine because of the cramped space.
Our trip was affected by the weather. During our 9-day stay, only 2 days were suitable for the beach. It seems spending time further south would be better in March. We struggled to find nearby indoor activities, visiting the Navy Museum in Pensacola and USS Alabama, which were both about an hour away. We had hoped to enjoy the beach, but it was cold, overcast, and rainy at times. We checked out several coffee shops, dined out, and visited the model train museum in Foley. I likely wouldn’t return to this area unless it was during the summer. It could be a nice spot for families then.
The zoo was fantastic! The giraffes were stunning, and my mom really enjoyed the butterfly exhibit; it was lovely. This was definitely my favorite spot during our time in Alabama.
As an animal enthusiast, I appreciate zoos that allow interaction with wildlife. We opted for the additional sloth and lemur encounters, along with tortoise and giraffe feedings, and I’m so glad we did. It was a unique experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. The zoo’s smaller size made exploring quick and easy. My husband and 19-year-old son had a great time too.
