I had a wonderful experience with Bucay Adventures, thanks to our fantastic host, Noe. He picked me up from my hotel, and after a two-hour drive past banana and shrimp farms, we reached Bucay and began our ascent up the mountain. The scenery was stunning. We took a brief stop to see a traditional sucre crane demonstration. Upon reaching the summit, we ventured into the rainforest where we encountered beautiful waterfalls. After our rainforest walk, we visited the Shuar community to learn about their traditional Amazonian lifestyle. After lunch, we returned to Guayaquil.
The Bucay Cloud Forest and Isabella Falls were breathtaking. Our guide, Wilson, was friendly and well-informed. I enjoyed trying the sugarcane press and learning about the Shuar community. The local cuisine was tasty. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.
The waterfalls offered an incredible view, and the mountain scenery was stunning. However, I found the interaction with the Shuar community to be overly scripted. I experienced a dance, enjoyed some whiskey, and watched a blowgun demonstration, but I didn't get the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversation with them. I was hoping for a chance to ask questions and perhaps share a meal, which would have allowed for deeper connections.
Getting out of the city to explore the cloud forest and learn about the indigenous community was thrilling. The hike was stunning but tougher than anticipated, with steep climbs on wet rocks in humid conditions. The altitude made it challenging for me, but our guide remained understanding and allowed breaks for me to rest. Afterward, we visited a Shuar family, who shared dance and traditional hunting techniques with us. I appreciated the authenticity of the experience, as it wasn't overly commercialized; however, I expected more insight into their daily life. Lunch on our return was enjoyable, featuring delicious lentil soup and a choice of chicken or beef with rice and beans, plus juice. Overall, it was a worthwhile outing.
This was a fantastic introduction to the lives of some incredible people. I'm eager to learn more. Using a blow dart gun was a highlight of the experience.
