Reviews
The trip could have been enjoyable, but I was not informed that half of the tour was closed for the season. It was disappointing to learn this afterward. We only got to visit one area with old buildings, and I’ve included pictures of those buildings.
The journey took an extremely long time, and it seems we weren’t taken to the correct location. Once we arrived, the roads were closed, preventing us from seeing anything.
I had a great time; however, I expected the fossil mama bear bucket to yield more than just a single piece of fossil or a small tooth. Aside from that, it was an enjoyable experience.
The tour was fantastic. The Cherokee provided intriguing interpretations of natural events. Although there wasn't enough time for the side tours, they all seemed appealing. We experienced some technical difficulties with the rental car, but that was unrelated to the guides. I recommend this experience.
Having the guide with us as we explored the park was fantastic. It was convenient to stop for hikes and then continue with the tour.
The audio guide was extremely informative, and I gained a lot of knowledge about the Great Smoky Mountains. The download functioned smoothly without any issues.
My wife and I opted for a self-guided tour without much hiking. I used some credits from Tripadvisor to buy this for a dollar, and it was worth it. The app worked well and provided narration, although it got a bit confusing on the way down. I recommend avoiding Smoky Mountain National Park during spring break; it was extremely crowded, even on a Thursday in March, and parking was a challenge everywhere, including the visitor center. We managed three short hikes, including a visit to Cataract Falls, which is accessed from the back of the Sugarland Visitor Center since it was too busy at the start. We also explored the Little Pigeon River and remnants of old housing from the early 1900s. It was a beautiful 80° clear day, and we made it to Newfound Gap, where the Appalachian Trail runs through. Last time I was in North Carolina, I went northbound from Cherokee, but that road was closed; it's now open all the way through.
The narration was inconsistent. I expected it to progress automatically, but I had to click after each segment finished, which made it difficult while navigating mountain roads.
The experience offered decent value for the price, but there was an overemphasis on myths and Native American stories, with insufficient attention given to the park itself, such as information about the trails and what can be discovered beyond the roadside.
We had an excellent experience. We made frequent stops to take photos and hiked to view the remaining chimneys. The audio guide was very informative, and we enjoyed learning about the Great Smoky Mountains.
