Lake Nicaragua (Lake Cocibolca)
Granada, Nicaragua

Lake Nicaragua, also known as Lake Cocibolca, is Central America's largest freshwater lake, spanning approximately 108 square kilometres. It is uniquely home to freshwater sharks and is framed by the volcanic landscape of Ometepe, an island formed by two towering volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, that rise dramatically from the water's edge.
Exploring the lake offers opportunities for canoeing and birdwatching, particularly around the islets that dot its expanse. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April, when the weather is more predictable. Note that the lake's diverse ecosystem reveals itself quietly, rewarding those who take the time to observe.
