Three hours in a comfortable vehicle — visit Clingmans Dome, learn about Native American history and logging impact on the forest, with optional short walk through the unique spruce-fir forest.
This three-hour driving tour offers a scenic exploration of the Great Smoky Mountains, reaching elevations above 5,000 ft. Starting from Gatlinburg, the route includes highlights of the Appalachian Trail and the Crest of the Smokies.
As you traverse this picturesque landscape, your guide shares insights about the local history, including Native American stories and the effects of logging on the ecosystem. The journey culminates at Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the National Park at 6,643 ft. If weather conditions allow, there’s an opportunity for a short walk through the spruce-fir forest to observe this unique environment up close. Dress warmly, as temperatures can vary significantly at the higher elevations.

Our tour was canceled just two hours before it was supposed to start. I'm still waiting for a refund. I was really excited about it, but now we have to leave on that day instead.
I can't provide a fair assessment of this tour since it was canceled due to unexpected issues with the van's brakes.
Kendil's deep knowledge and lifelong experience in the area truly shone during our tour. She shared fascinating insights about the history and the fire, and we had the chance to stand on the Tennessee-North Carolina state line. We could explore the site where Rockefeller and FDR dedicated the park in 1934 while reading all the informative signs. The 1:30 PM Sunday tour was pleasantly uncrowded and traffic was minimal. With a stunning clear fall day, our views extended for miles. I only wish I had an extra hour to hike up Kuwohi, the tallest point for seeing all seven states. Kendrick kindly dropped us off in town, suggesting great dinner spots and directing us to the Visitor Center via the FREE Gatlinburg Trolley. It was a fantastic experience.
Our experience on the Smokey Mountain High Points Tour was fantastic. Wes was warm and engaging, creating a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere for our group. His fascinating historical insights, along with personal anecdotes, made the mountains feel alive. His enthusiasm and expertise made the tour both educational and unforgettable. We strongly recommend this tour for its beautiful scenery, rich history, and authentic connections.
The guide demonstrated impressive knowledge about the Smoky Mountains and provided an excellent experience throughout the tour.
Lydia was fantastic and incredibly knowledgeable.
The Smoky Mountain High Points Driving Tour offers a straightforward and informative approach to exploring the mountains. The ride is leisurely, and the guide provided a wealth of knowledge.
Kyndel, our guide, was friendly, funny, and very knowledgeable. She took her time with us and we truly appreciated her. We gained valuable insights into the area's flora and history. Even though our guided hike the following day was canceled because of the weather, she sent us texts with directions for a couple of shorter hikes we could do on our own that same day. The only thing I would have preferred was a few more stops for scenic views.
The drive was incredibly relaxing and picturesque. We made several scenic stops, allowing for some fantastic photo opportunities. Our guide offered a wealth of historical information and directed us to the best viewpoints. They were also very friendly.
We had a great time on our tour in the Smoky Mountains, benefiting from nearly perfect weather. Our guide Jay was friendly and had extensive knowledge of the area. However, we were let down by the limited 15 to 20 minutes spent at Clingman’s Dome/Kuwhohi, especially since the itinerary from Booking.com and TripAdvisor indicated a 60-minute stop, which led us to expect a chance to hike. We did visit the Elkmont Ghost Town, which was fascinating. Afterward, I checked the itinerary again, and I confirmed the details hadn’t changed. While there was misleading information, I’m still giving a five-star rating because we genuinely enjoyed the tour. It would be beneficial to update the description to align with the details found on both Viator's and the Smoky Mountain Guides websites.
