This hike connects two of the tallest peaks of Madeira Island. It is also possible to observe several birds, some of which are exclusive to Macaronesia, such as the canary of the land (Serinus canaria), the petty of the field (Anthus berthelottii madeirensis) and the andorinhão-da-serra (Apus unicolor). Near the Pico Ruivo shelter is the track PR 1.2, which leads to the Achada do Teixeira.
