This was an absolute waste of time. We traveled down the Chena River for a short distance before turning back. The presentations on the shore felt cheesy and unprofessional. The narrator spent too much time talking about the family that owns the riverboat, which was not of interest to anyone. We were even instructed to wave at the matriarch in her yard, but it could have easily been a high school student pretending to be an elderly woman.
I found this cruise somewhat disappointing. While it was informative, much of the content felt like a pretext for sales pitches. The $90 ticket price for a 3-hour cruise seemed fair, but we also spent an additional $20 on lunch, which was a disappointing canned beef stew, wilted salad, and a sweet brownie that looked nothing like the online photos. The tour's best moment was visiting the recreated Athabaskan village, which was engaging and the reason for my 3-star rating instead of 2. However, most of the tour felt like an infomercial, with interesting discussions followed by attempts to sell us items. For instance, after learning about the sled dog training camp, we were prompted to buy a book about a sled dog named Granite, conveniently sold in the onboard gift shop. Similarly, we tasted smoked salmon spread on crackers, only to find it for sale at inflated prices. At the end of the cruise, we had to pass through a gift shop filled with overpriced souvenirs. Honestly, I would have preferred just the tour of the Athabaskan village and was ready to head back well before the 3 hours concluded.
This tour offers an excellent opportunity to discover Alaska and its residents, including well-known Fairbanks locals and dog sledding teams. We particularly enjoyed the nostalgic paddle boat ride and the replica village of the First People, where narrators provided firsthand insights into their traditional way of life. It's a fantastic half-day experience that accommodates those with minor mobility challenges.
Our Holland cruise line tour package included this river boat ride, which surpassed our expectations. It turned out to be quite informative, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The boat paused at a dog sledding location, where we saw a seaplane take off and land next to us, and we also disembarked at a recreated native village. Be sure to check out the -40° F in the store when you go; you won’t regret taking this river boat ride.
The Riverboat Discovery cruise was a fantastic addition to our trip, which we took through Princess at the end of our visit in Fairbanks, Alaska. The bus ride from Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge to Fairbanks lasted about 2 hours and 15 minutes, with a break in Nenana. At the Riverboat Discovery's dock, there were plenty of options for souvenirs and snacks. We waited around 45 minutes to an hour before boarding, choosing to sit on the third level on the dock side, which offered great views. The experience included seeing a float plane and enjoying a presentation about Susan Butcher and her dog, Granite, led by her daughter, Tekla. We also visited the Chena Village Living Museum to learn about the Athabaskan people's way of life. Overall, it was a delightful part of our excursion, and I highly recommend the Riverboat Discovery when visiting Fairbanks. Just remember to bring or purchase mosquito repellent if you're in shorts and t-shirts—it will be worth it!
Our experience on the sternwheeler cruise was outstanding. We enjoyed the scenic views of lovely homes along the river, and several families greeted us from the banks. The first stop was at the kennels, where we saw training pups and learned about sled dogs and their lifestyles, followed by an impressive demonstration of a sled team in action. Afterwards, we visited Chena Village for a guided tour. To top it off, we were thrilled to spot a beaver in the river just before departing the village.
This excursion was exceptionally organized, starting with the bus transport (booked through Holland Cruise), followed by a meal and the paddle boat experience. Onboard, the information and demonstrations were impressive, enhanced by video screens for better visibility. The guides covered topics like bush pilots and dog sleds, and Authentic Native American guides shared insights about the Athabaskan Tribe and their way of life. Participants had the opportunity to explore a village and learn further about these topics. It was a fantastic experience, truly worth the cost.
This riverboat excursion was fantastic! The views were stunning, and the commentators were very well-informed. It greatly surpassed our expectations and is a must-do when in Fairbanks.
The tour was overpriced for what it offered. It felt very much like a bus tour experience. If you prefer being transported quickly from one site to another, this might appeal to you. While the guides were enthusiastic, there was only a brief overview of bush pilots and dog mushing, and a shallow depiction of village life. Important issues like the challenges these communities face were overlooked. Although it was enjoyable to visit the river junction of the Chena and Tanana, I wouldn’t recommend this tour for anyone genuinely wanting to explore Alaska. The gift shop was one highlight, though.
This experience is absolutely essential while in Fairbanks. The tour is exceptionally organized, insightful, engaging, and steeped in cultural relevance. Collaborating with locals and professionals, it features skilled speakers and an experienced team. You will gain extensive knowledge about the geography, history, and cultures while taking in the breathtaking landscapes. It offers a wonderful chance to relax, appreciate the views, and enjoy captivating storytelling. You'll also learn about various aspects of life, including winter dogs, indigenous peoples who have lived on the land for generations, and even a living museum off the boat. The cultural depth, historical significance, quality, and originality make this tour truly outstanding.
