We had an incredible experience hiking in El Chaltén. The day was perfect, and our guide, Laura, was excellent. She was patient with my two adult children and me since it was our first mountain climb. The views during the ascent were stunning. The trek felt very secure, and it's definitely something you should do while you're there.
The level of disappointment we experienced cannot be overstated. While visiting the south of Argentina and staying in El Calafate, we booked a tour with Bonanza for our adult children well in advance. After a three-hour drive, we dropped them off at Bonanza and went to explore. Two hours later, we noticed our kids waiting outside, only to find out that the tour we paid for was not running that day. It took over an hour for someone to acknowledge they were still there. They were eventually offered a horseback riding tour scheduled for much later, but this wasn’t what they had anticipated, so they turned it down. When we spoke to the staff, they did offer to credit the tour cost, but this didn't compensate for our efforts to make the trip, including a rented car and an extra night in El Calafate. When we sought further compensation, we were offered a dinner that didn’t fit our schedule since we had to leave soon. After requesting to speak with a manager who was unavailable, our repeated requests for another form of compensation were denied. The entire experience was unacceptable, and we do not recommend Bonanza.
The Via Ferrata excursion was fantastic and comes highly recommended. Despite lacking prior climbing experience, we found it easy to grasp the needed techniques. The entire experience felt secure, providing a wonderful climbing adventure without intense physical strain. The views were stunning, and the zip line descent was thrilling yet safe.
I make it a point to try a via ferrata in every country I visit if possible. Although the activity isn't widely popular in El Chaltén due to its appeal to serious climbers, Estancia Bonanza offers a beginner option (level A) that is ideal for first-timers. As someone over 60 with a bad back, I found it very manageable. Safety is prioritized with their C-carabiner system, which prevents the common mistake of improperly clipping in and out. The entire ferrata experience lasts about 1.5 hours, featuring some basic climbing, two high wires, and a zip line, with guides who are both helpful and patient. I almost passed on the estancia barbecue, but it turned out to be the best roast lamb I had during my trip, so I was glad I gave it a try. I also participated in a horseback ride, which was a standard nose-to-tail experience through the valley, lacking in excitement.
