Four hours exploring Ukunda village — market visit, primary school stop, herbal medicine insights, and local community interactions.
This half-day tour provides a glimpse into rural life in Ukunda, starting with a visit to the bustling local market where daily necessities are bought and sold. Depending on the primary school schedule, there's also an opportunity to engage with the students — bringing small gifts like books or pens is appreciated, though not mandatory.
The tour continues through the village, showcasing simple homesteads and local customs. You'll meet a Mganga, or traditional healer, who now focuses on herbal treatments rather than the mystical practices of the past. Plan for about four hours of exploration and cultural exchange.

There is so much to share about this experience; I truly enjoyed every moment. The service was outstanding, and I loved the food and the relaxing atmosphere. The views were simply breathtaking, and I can't stop admiring the splendor and grandeur from the balcony.
This was an excellent tour. It was wonderful to interact with local residents alongside a guide who lives nearby. We felt very welcomed. Bring plenty of candy to share; the children's smiles in the town and schools are unforgettable.
We enjoyed a wonderful morning. Our guide was friendly and spoke excellent French. I strongly recommend this experience, as it fully immersed us in the daily routines of local life.
The owner of the company arranged for me to join the tour from Mombasa, which I appreciated. However, I need to be honest about this specific tour. My tour guide was friendly, but he didn’t offer much guidance after the initial part of the trip. There were two other guides present, and he mainly relied on them. Upon arrival, a man asked for my family members' names and then tried to sell me bracelets for 500 KSH each. Lunch was underwhelming; although a kind woman taught us to cook, my two bites were overshadowed by the other guides who ate the majority of the meal, which felt rude given that we paid for the experience. I recommend bringing snacks and water, as the only drink offered during the 6-7 hours was local alcohol, which I don't consume because of my faith. Every stop felt like a demand for money, and while I support local communities, I didn’t appreciate being treated like a cash machine. Be cautious with your spending, as many things are not included in the tour price. The biggest letdown was bringing donations for a local school, only to find no children present. My entire bag of supplies was placed on a bench with no acknowledgment, and instead, I was asked for money by the pastor. I ended the day feeling heartbroken, having not met any children, and felt misled about the experience. If I had known there would be requests for additional funds, I would have preferred to donate directly to a village. I would think twice before booking with this company again, as my experience was very disappointing compared to others.
It was an excellent journey! I especially appreciated the cooking of traditional Kenyan dishes and the visit to the "Born Again Children's Home," which truly deserves our assistance.
It's important to note that this tour is a fundraiser, with donations being voluntary. A boy approached us to make bracelets in exchange for a donation, and we received coconuts also for a contribution before food preparation. The village market featured both local and commercial goods, and there was a donation basket during the Gririami dance. We visited a children's home, and afterward, we were taken to the manager's office, where he presented the donation book to just us. Though the travel provider stated that all donations are voluntary, the pressure to contribute on-site felt quite strong and emotional. The duration of the tour was about 4.5 hours, including travel back to the hotel, rather than the advertised 6 hours. I was hoping for a genuine experience of bush life without the focus on fundraising. Additionally, the children in the village expect candy, so bringing plenty is advisable. The two points I awarded were solely for our guide Samsong, who was excellent and provided thorough explanations throughout the tour.
We enjoyed a private tour in Ukunda that was simply fantastic. Our guide, Samson, was exceptional and very engaging, providing us with valuable insights into local village life, the various tribes, and their histories. Cooking ugali with the village mama was a special experience, and participating in the welcoming dance was unforgettable. We are truly grateful to Samson for this remarkable tour and appreciate all the photos he captured. We would also like to commend our driver, Nehemia, who was both professional and friendly, making our journey enjoyable. This experience comes highly recommended for anyone looking to immerse themselves in authentic culture.
I was extremely pleased with the experience. Our friendly driver picked us up from the hotel and brought us straight to where our guide was waiting. I witnessed a lot and, more importantly, gained insights into local life. I highly recommend this.
