One-mile round-trip walk — explore tide pools, steep cliffs, and a sea cave with a pirate guide.
This one-mile round-trip walk along the rocky shores of Dana Point is hosted by Captain Will Radford, who encourages participants to dress and talk like pirates. The hike includes exploring tide pools, viewing steep cliffs, and visiting a giant sea cave while entertaining pirate lore, including tales of buried treasure and sea monsters.
Expect uneven and wet terrain with loose rocks, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Bring a meal to enjoy at the cave. The timing is determined by low tide and weather conditions, adding an element of planning to your adventure.

Captain Will demonstrated extensive knowledge regarding the local people, wildlife, and geology. The added entertainment of singing pirate songs made for a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
This experience was fantastic! There was an abundance of sea life in the tide pools, and the captain was entertaining and an excellent guide. He shared delightful stories and played enjoyable music. The caves were stunning, and witnessing the sunset there was breathtaking. It was truly perfect. I highly recommend this tour.
The location is less frequented, situated on the rocky side rather than near the boats. It’s best to visit in the morning, as the waves can make walking along the rocks difficult, risking wet shoes and pants. However, the experience of seeing the cave is definitely worthwhile.
This place is a lot of fun to explore. Although we went without a guide due to time constraints, I believe having one would have enhanced the experience significantly. I highly suggest wearing hiking or tennis shoes. If you arrive during medium tide like we did, be ready to walk barefoot for part of the journey or switch to water shoes.
Captain Will Radford was not only knowledgeable but also entertaining and delightful. The experience included exploring tidepools, enjoying songs and dancing, and encountering anemones and pelicans.
The guide was outstanding and truly dedicated to ensuring we enjoyed ourselves. He welcomed all our questions about the sea life and plants we saw during low tide. My daughter even got to touch a small octopus with his help. He showed great interest in our discoveries and eagerly explained everything. His captivating performance in the cave was a highlight. This adventure has brought our family so much joy in remembering the experience.
