Three hours by van or SUV — search for wild mustangs and local wildlife in Wyoming's Badlands, with plenty of photography opportunities along the way.
This three-hour tour takes you into the heart of Wyoming's Badlands, where the wild mustangs roam freely across 123,000 acres of rugged terrain. You'll depart daily at 8 AM from Cody, traveling in a small van, SUV, or safari truck, depending on group size and availability.
The tour focuses on the McCullough Peaks, known for its wild horse herds. Expect photo opportunities of not just the mustangs but also other wildlife, including coyotes, mule deer, and various bird species. The dramatic desert landscape adds to the visual feast, so be prepared to capture the beauty of the surroundings.
Reviews
This is a late review since we were camping in Yellowstone and had no service. On May 23, I took a morning tour to see the Mustangs. Although I don’t usually leave reviews, this tour was excellent. We were able to observe three different herds, which our guide explained thoroughly. It was incredible seeing wild horses for the first time. Our knowledgeable guide, wearing a black cowboy hat, shared so much information I felt overwhelmed. While we saw two horses close to the road, we remained inside the van for safety since we were too close. I managed to get some great pictures. Once we were at a safe distance, we stopped and got out. I appreciated that the horses were mostly left undisturbed in their natural habitat. The only downside was that the van was old and in need of repair. I would definitely consider doing this tour again.
This experience was a complete waste of money. The guide was unaware of the horses' location, and the off-road drive was extremely bumpy. The horses were far away, and we could have easily done this with our own car.
The ride was excellent, and our guide Steve was outstanding. He provided fantastic insights about the region and the horses. Since our tour followed a lot of rain, the horses were less active and often stayed at a distance. If you decide to go, bring binoculars or a professional camera, as phone cameras struggle to capture images from afar. We spotted several beautiful Prong Horns during the tour. Overall, we had an enjoyable experience and appreciated having such a wonderful guide. Thank you for offering this tour service.
The experience wasn't worth the $315 for my family of four. We only saw a few horses and mainly drove around the desert, trying to get closer without success.
Sunny served as our guide, and she truly exceeded our expectations. Her knowledge of the land, laws, and horses was impressive, and her friendly demeanor made the experience even better. She brought us safely close to the horses and made sure we captured a family photo together. It was a truly unforgettable experience.
This was a fantastic tour with a knowledgeable and accommodating team. We experienced stunning landscapes and, thanks to their expertise, got to see a large herd of beautiful wild horses. It was an excellent experience.
This experience was truly exceptional. Our guide, Olivia, demonstrated great expertise about the area, including where to locate the mustangs and their history. We witnessed two herds and explored the badlands, reminiscent of South Dakota. The first herd comprised three stallions near a river, disappearing shortly after our arrival, but everyone managed to get a glimpse and some photos. The second herd included around 40 mustangs, featuring a notable large white stallion with an intriguing story, as well as some yearlings and paints. We approached within 300 feet, allowing ample time for photos and observation of their behavior. The spotting scope enhanced our viewing experience. We traveled in a comfortable tall 15-passenger van, mainly on unpaved, bumpy roads, though it was not too rugged. I highly recommend this tour. While there's no guarantee to see mustangs, having an experienced guide significantly boosts your chances. It's reasonable not to penalize the tour with a poor review for not seeing any wild animals, as they follow their own schedules. I would definitely participate in this tour again during our next visit; it’s an absolute essential. Alex and Kelly from Spokane.
We were able to see around 8 bands of mustangs. Deanna, our guide, was fantastic—friendly and very knowledgeable. She was especially thoughtful towards my husband, who requires assistance getting in and out of the van due to walking slower.
The owner attempted to change our scheduled time from 5 PM to 8 AM, which was unrealistic since we would have needed to leave at 3:30 AM. I suggested canceling, and he promised to call by noon the next day if there was a cancellation, but I never received a call. We were the only two on the tour and arrived early to meet the owner, who was not very welcoming. The guide was friendly but seemed inexperienced. When we finally located two old stallions, he matched our excitement, but overall, I wouldn't recommend this experience.
We had an enjoyable time on the tour with Phoebe, especially since it ended up just being our family of four. Everyone, including our hard-to-please teenagers, had a great experience and I would definitely recommend it. The tour lasted approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. We observed pronghorn antelopes and a group of mustangs from a respectful distance, and we even learned their names, with the foal named Bon Jovi being a favorite. Walking out to see the animals felt safe with Phoebe guiding us, and although we were in rattlesnake territory, we thankfully did not encounter any. Additionally, we gained insights about local legends and the nearby mountains. One suggestion: wearing long trousers and high boots is wise to avoid prickly pears.
