What's the itinerary?+
• The journey begins in Sedro-Woolley, a unique town that was formed by merging two separate settlements. Previously, locals humorously referred to it as Bug due to the prevalence of mosquitoes, a name the town's women did not favor. The entire route spans over 144 miles and features more than 100 audio narratives, taking approximately 4–5 hours to complete. Travelers can depart from either Sedro-Woolley to Winthrop or vice versa. Lifetime access is included, allowing use anytime on any trip without any expiration. • In the mid-to-late 1800s, early pioneers traveled from various parts of the country, including Pennsylvania and North Carolina, as well as Canada. Their motivations varied from seeking gold to trapping fur or looking for fertile land. • Close by is Rasar State Park, known for its lush rainforest environment in Skagit County. Visitors can enjoy views of the Skagit River and approximately 4,000 feet of freshwater shoreline suitable for fishing and camping. A fee is required for entry. • Old-growth forests, characterized by their age and lack of major disturbances such as logging, are rare. Some trees within these forests are over 300 years old. • The powerful Skagit River has been a consistent sight during the drive. Stretching 150 miles, it flows from British Columbia into northwest Washington, our current location. • We are nearing the western entrance of North Cascades National Park, which is free to visit. However, a Northwest Forest Pass is necessary for those planning to hike the trails. • Diablo Dam and Diablo Lake are ahead. Known as the second dam of the Skagit Hydroelectric Project, Diablo Dam, constructed in 1930, stands 389 feet tall and was the tallest dam in the world at the time of its completion. • We are currently crossing the Thunder Arm of Diablo Lake, with a better view coming soon as we approach the Diablo Lake Vista Point. This brief stop is worthwhile. • There is a forested trail leading down to Ross Lake and Ross Dam. This moderate 1.5-mile hike takes roughly an hour and is suitable for most skill levels if time permits. • Easy Pass Trail is next. Contrary to its name, this seven-mile trail presents challenges and can take over three hours to hike. Difficulties include the creeks it crosses, which can become hazardous during rain or snowmelt, and snow that can linger well into July. • A moderate four-mile hike takes about two hours to finish, passing through meadows and thick forests until reaching a glimmering blue glacial lake nestled in the wilderness. This is a good choice for those wanting an ideal mountain photo opportunity. • We are nearing the Washington Pass Observation Site, an essential viewpoint offering stunning sights of Liberty Bell Mountain and Early Winters Spires. The Washington Pass sees up to 40 feet of snow in winter due to its location among towering peaks. • A bend in the road ahead offers a great view of Kangaroo Ridge, which extends three miles and reaches a height of 8,326 feet at its peak. A brief stop here is recommended for a good view of the mountains. • We are traversing Okanogan County, home to the Okanogan tribe, where just over 38,000 people currently reside. This area was among the last to be settled by non-Okanogan peoples due to its remote nature. • We will be driving alongside the clear Methow River. Spanning nearly 2,000 miles, the river is named after a Native American tribe in the area, with the name roughly translating to salmon falls river. • Our destination, Winthrop, was first visited only by fur trappers, with more white settlers arriving in the late 1800s.
