I visited midweek, beginning at Rockfish Gap near Waynesboro, where I stayed overnight for an early start. There was no line to enter the park, and due to the government shutdown, the usual $30 fee was waived. I had learned that I could have obtained a $20 senior annual pass for entry. Make sure to download the park map ahead of time since there's no WiFi and limited cell service. A highlight of my trip was the Action Tours guide I found on TripAdvisor, which cost $16.99. I downloaded it before arriving, and it provided a map and an audio tour of the entire 135-mile drive, detailing points of interest and the trails. It was fantastic and worth the price, with access available for a year after purchase. Driving through was gorgeous, though the speed limit is 35 mph, with sharp curves and wildlife. I spotted deer and various birds, and some tree groves that date back to the park's founding. While traffic was light for a midweek day, there were a few drivers speeding at 55 mph, which posed a risk to wildlife. A semi-truck also sped dangerously, likely making deliveries. Most drivers adhered to the speed limit, allowing time to truly enjoy the stunning scenery transitioning from forest to open meadows. There are several picnic and restroom facilities, including Loft Mountain, Louis Mountain, Skyland, Big Meadows, Elk Wallow, and Dickey Ridge Visitor Center. I look forward to making this drive again and using the Action Tours app once more.
This audio tour was enjoyable for my husband and me, and we felt it was a great value for the cost. It provided plenty of historical information and highlighted good trails and overlooks. There were some glitches, possibly related to the mountains since cell service can be quite limited in the park. The narrator's voice was pleasant and easy to listen to. We would definitely look into similar tours if visiting another location that offers them.
The stories shared were engaging and generally well-paced throughout the journey. I gained valuable insights into the local Indian tribes along the way.
We utilized this app for our visit to Shenandoah National Park, and found it very user-friendly. After downloading, it provided all the guidance we needed. The information was quite detailed, making me highly recommend this touring app.
The drive along Skyline Drive was wonderful, especially during fall when the park is vibrant with autumn colors. There are excellent lookout points throughout, with my favorites located in the northern section near Front Royal. Accommodations in cabins are offered too; they may be small but include all necessary amenities.
The audio guide effectively tracked our location throughout the drive, providing us with fascinating information and history. Although the weather was poor, with heavy cloud cover obscuring some scenic views, we still appreciated the journey and enjoyed whatever we could see.
The scenery was stunning right from the skyline. We visited several viewpoints and hiked a couple of trails. We're planning to return to explore the routes that include waterfalls.
My son and I had a great experience with the informative narration. We valued the insights about tribal communities and the locals affected by the creation of the National Park. The tips on prioritizing viewpoints and hikes were very useful. The discussions on elevation, natural features, geography, trees, and wildlife were beneficial. I highly recommend this for an unforgettable visit.
We really enjoy these driving tours and make it a point to do them wherever we go. The narration is enjoyable, and the information provided is both entertaining and informative.
Hearing interesting facts and information about Shenandoah National Park made the drive enjoyable and added to the overall fun of the experience.
